May 22nd was this year's Billboard Awards, with performances from Rihanna, Kesha, Nick Jonas and many more. A performance that everybody was waiting on was Madonna's tribute to Prince. As you know, the "Purple Rain" singer recently passed away. Fans everywhere were shocked and saddened by the news.
Billboard took it upon themselves to give the legendary singer a tribute, and they announced it was going to be done by Madonna, who collaborated with Prince in the 1989 song named "Love Song". There was varied reaction from fans throughout, some saying that the performance should not be done by the "Vouge" singer. There was even a petition for Madonna not to perform. Alas, the performance went on anyway, with even more harsh words for Madonna. Madonna sang Prince's famous ballad "Nothing Compares 2 U," sporting a sparkly purple suit and sitting on a throne in the beginning of the performance. She was soon joined by Stevie Wonder, but some saying even he could not save the performance. Critics said that the performance could have had more singers paying tribute to Prince, and many more of Prince's hits should have been sang that night.
On June 26, the upcoming BET Awards is set to air. Amid all the haters bashing the performance, they put their two cents in and Tweeted out this really shady comment: "Yeah we saw that. Don't worry. We got you." along with a video of Prince.
There were some who defended Madonna's performance, most notably Questlove. As some may know Questlove is the drummer from the band The Roots, who is featured on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon." At the Billboards he introduced Madonna's tribute to Prince.
Later Questlove took to Twitter: "Every Prince rendition will not be a life-changing orgasmic xperience," "Just to SING his work is brave enough. Again feelings are on high." In a second tweet he said, "And EVERYBODY wants and deserves a chance to say goodbye in their own way," he added. "But remember: there will be AMAs, SoulTrain, NAACP, mtv, GRAMMYS. And a gazillion other tributes. But the point is let's not get ugly w playing the "Prince would and wouldn't approve" game."
As a gal who is not the biggest fan of Madonna, I would have to agree with Questlove on this one. The performance wasn't this amazing, tear-jerking, bring-down-the-house performance that everybody wanted or was expecting. It was much more intimate, and even though Madonna wasn't the artist I was expecting to sing this tribute, she did an alright job with trying to sing one of my favorite Prince songs. Madonna has lot of haters, so in some respect, many of the comments could come off as bias due to not liking Madonna from the get-go. I also thought that it was quite touching that at the end of the performance Madonna says, "Thank you, thank you so much, ladies and gentlemen. And most of all, thank you, Prince Rogers Nelson, for all that you have given us. Thank you. Good night," Just like Questlove said, this isn't it people! There are going to be way more Prince tributes from different award shows, the way the decide to dedicate Prince will be in different ways that we may or may not love.
At the end of the day, nobody can sing a Prince song better than Prince himself.
If you were wondering, Madonna posted on Instagram a picture with the caption, "Anyone who wants to do a tribute to Prince is welcome to. Whatever your age Gender or skin Color. If you loved him and he inspired you then show it!!!! I love Prince 4 ever."
