...And a Happy New Year

Was 2016 Really That Bad?

Recently while scrolling through Instagram or Facebook, I’ve come across several posts and articles stating why “2016 was the worst year” or “why 2016 needs to end.” It seems like more and more people have joined the conversation as to why 2016 was pretty awful, and not only this year but past years as well.

Once again, we find ourselves approaching one of the biggest celebrations of the year and it seems as if we were just welcoming in 2016.

So why do we always seem so anxious for the year to end? We are constantly wishing things away without taking into consideration all the good things that have happened. Sure, Donald Trump was elected as President and yes, it is nice to welcome in a new year and have a clean slate, but there’s also some really great things that happened this year.

For me personally, I can proudly say that I spent a great senior year with best friends, graduated high school, and began college at a school that I love. There’s been some hardships throughout the year, but there’s been laughter, happiness, and accomplishments as well. As we stated at the end of our high school career, 2016 was our year and it was this year where I and many others took the first steps towards our future in the real world.

It was an eventful year to say the least, from politics to entertainment to international and national events.

As we celebrate the holidays and anticipate the new year, here’s are just a few reasons why to be thankful for 2016: (according to the Huffington Post)

The Premiere of Finding Dory

Chemotherapy breakthroughs have increased pancreatic cancer survival rates from 16% to 27%

The ALS challenge has brought researchers closer to finding a cure

Tiger numbers are growing

And pandas are no longer endangered

Leonardo DiCaprio finally won an Oscar, and gave a pretty good speech on global warming

California is now powering over 6 million homes with solar power

There was a new Harry Potter book and movie released

So here’s to the highs and lows of 2016, and here’s to whatever 2017 may bring.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
