Wanderlust: an urge to wander or travel
That is the literal definition according to Webster's Dictionary. However, I relate more to one of Urban Dictionary's definitions:
A deep, uncontrollable desire to hit the road and travel, by whatever means desired; to explore and enjoy the world
If you haven't traveled, even if it's just within your state, you're missing out. And if you manage to go through your entire 20's without going on an adventure of some kind, you're doing life wrong. There is literally no better time to explore the world than in your 20's.
First of all, in the beginning at least, you're in college. It's supposed to be the time for you to make rash (and often stupid) decisions. You're kind of an adult, but you're not yet bogged down with the pressures and responsibilities of having a grown up job. Do you want to be that cool old person telling your grandchildren about your crazy, fun adventures, or do you want to be a dud the rest of your life without a story to tell?
When else are you going to get the chance to road trip with your best friend on a whim? When you're married with a nine-to-five job? No. You have to take these chances when you can, while you're still young and have the energy and ability to do so.
It doesn't matter if you go 30 minutes down the road to a waterfall or five hours away to a beach. Any adventure is worth it. I firmly believe it is the best form of therapy - to get away, disconnect from your day-to-day life, connect with nature. Something about the fresh air, or salty air if you're a beach person (which I am), seems to just wash away the stress and fatigue and monotony that comes with your everyday life. It's like an energy shot rebooting your spirits
You might even find that you enjoy being out of your comfort zone just a little bit. If you're OCD (like me), embrace spontaneity and don't plan. Just go. Do something that scares you. Don't go crazy and give yourself a panic attack, though. Start with something small. Even baby steps can feel liberating.
Who knows? Somewhere along the way you might find your person...or your dream town...or job. You never know unless you get out there and live. Don't just exist; LIVE.
