As I'm writing this article, the #Enough! National School Walkout is taking place in high schools and universities across the United States. A peaceful demonstration that marks the one-month anniversary of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting, this nationwide event allows students and teachers from all around to do two things: honor the memory of those lost to gun violence, and demand change in our nation's gun laws. Fordham is hosting its own walkout, complete with seventeen minutes of silence in honor of the seventeen murdered last month.
Of course, the walkout will have ended by the time this article is posted. Is that it, then? Nothing more we can do to call attention to gun violence in the US?
Thankfully, no. There's still far more to be done.
One of the next events that you can participate in is the March For Our Lives event, which will take place on March 24th, gathering in DC and in cities all around the world to call for stricter gun laws. There will also be another walkout on April 20th in honor of gun violence victims on the anniversary Columbine shooting.
If public demonstration isn't your thing, then you can follow this guide to contact your representatives and ask them to advocate for better gun laws. Keeping the issue in the public eye is helpful as well: tweeting, 'gramming, and all-around posting about the problem of gun control is its own form of advocating, so keep the conversation flowing!
All in all, gun control is a big issue, but with small steps like these, you can help make a difference.
