This past Saturday the Nevada Coalition for Suicide Prevention held their 10th annual "Walk in Memory -- Walk for Hope" suicide prevention walk at Bob Miller Middle School. The number 10 held a great weight of power this year. According to the CDC suicide is the 10th leading cause of death. In an effort to help reduce that statistic on suicide, the Nevada Coalition is making great strides, this walk being one of the greatest. The 10th annual walk was held during Suicide Prevention Week on September 10th -- World Suicide Prevention Day.

The Nevada Coalition for Suicide Prevention is an organization that works tirelessly to drop suicide rates. The national statistics for death by suicide have tragically gone up. However, the rates in Nevada have dropped. The Nevada Coalition is really making a difference in our community. They help save lives and care for the lives left behind. To be a part of this movement or for information, please visit their website at https://nvsuicideprevention.org/who-we-are/.

"Remember those we've lost, and protect those they left behind."

Banners with this saying were placed throughout the school and gym where the event was held. It is a small sentiment, but with great impact. All around are huge groups sporting team shirts in loving memory of someone who took their life. Along with these shirts, colored beaded necklaces are seen each standing for the loss of a different person. Colors for children, parents, spouses, military, and, sadly, many more. Walkers and volunteers head to the gym for an opening ceremony to the walk. As head members of the organization speak, you hear the care that is held for the spread of awareness. Next, you hear from many who have lost a loved one to suicide. The battles they have overcome are phenomenal. A room filled with people who have personal connections to suicide also provides a room filled with people who's hearts go out to one another. Their souls filled with passion and devotion to helping others.

To close the ceremonies before the walk begins, everyone comes down from their seats in the bleachers. They are asked to join the center of the floor when the title of the person they have lost has been listed. In groups, people join the center as they announce the loss of a child, spouse, parent, friend, sibling, and asked to join the very center are those who lost someone in the past year. Although it is painful, you recognize the support held in our community. After they have dispersed the walk begins with the releasing of doves. Hundreds of people are walking memory and in hope.

Suicide is a rough topic to talk about, but it is vital that we openly speak of it. It is okay to talk about it. The acronym "A.C.T." stands for "valuable steps of action to be taken when you know of someone contemplating committing suicide. A- Acknowledge. Acknowledge that there is an issue. C- Care. Care for that person. T- Tell. Tell someone who can help." You and the person you are caring for can't do this alone. Together we can prevent the worst... Be a part of the movement to prevent more tragedies and join the fight with the Nevada Coalition for Suicide Prevention.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
