Every single kid on the planet who went away for college has spent this first month of summer probably talking about how badly they want to be back. For us Buckeyes, it isn't the typical 'Oh I can't wait to be back out of my parents' house.' It's 'We can't wait to go to our second home which holds some of the most incredible experiences we are likely to ever have.' That being said I've spent maybe a little too much time reflecting on the incredible experiences of my very first year as a Buckeye.
We kicked off the year with convocation: a cool concept that worked as a sort of reverse graduation. The Ohio State class of 2020 (ish) was welcomed in at the Schottenstein Center and learned all of the cool opportunities coming up. The idea was to get us involved over the next four years either at the school or throughout the (amazing) city of Columbus. All the while there was this jazz band playing intermittently. As convocation was wrapping up we were asked to once again direct our attention to the jazz band where the front bass player was removing a hat and sunglasses. This was our first formal introduction to the President of the University. Like, where else is the college's President just going to be hiding in a jazz band? So at this point, we know what kind of school we are going to and we are into it.
A real-life picture of the real-life Dr. Michael Drake being nothing less than a badass.
So things go on and before we know it the first football game of the year is upon us. The week building up to the first game of the season is comparable to nothing, except the game against the Team Up North. This was the first time that most of us realized the camaraderie that comes with being a Buckeye. The first time we did O-H-I-O as a whole stadium, it felt like coming home to the biggest family you've ever seen. We belonged to something so much bigger than us and that isn't something that is going to end after our four years (or more) are up. We also went on to beat TTUN this season, but I digress.
If you look really close, I'm the one in red in the South Endzone.
Then there are all of the other events that were offered this year. We were able to take a workout class on the South Oval taught by real Victoria's Secret Angels. We saw Dan Mintz's, the voice of Tina Belcher from "Bob's Burger's," perform a stand-up show. Our theater department put on "Heathers," i.e. my favorite movie of all time. We were able to see Michael Che and Colin Jost of Saturday Night Live's "Weekend Update", some of were lucky enough to sit in on a Skype call to Russia to hear from Edward Snowden and so many more amazing opportunities.
From the countless events put on by our school, to joining Greek life, to just walking around our incredible campus, Ohio State has felt like nothing but a second home for us since we got our letters stating "Congratulations, you're a Buckeye now!" And Buckeyes we will stay.
