By now everyone and their mother knows what a VSCO girl is. Well, I just learned about this trend about a month ago. I'm very late to the party.
So when I started researching what a VSCO girl was, all I saw was what I wore when I was a teenager in the 1990's-2000's. I used to wear the vans and scrunchies, always had my walkman and backpack with me, and wore the oversize shirts with the athletic shorts.
Now I am seeing Gen Z wearing it, and they are calling it VSCO style, when it's just the 1990's-2000's tumbler girl updated and way more expensive. This trend is very popular with the teen scene and into your early 20's. But I'm 35 and I still wear most of this and I have for years. So, does that make me a VSCO Lady?
According to sites like URBAN dictionary, a VSCO girl is:
VSCO girl wears Brandy Melville crop tops and oversized tees that eclipse one's shorts, so you look like your not wearing any pants but surprise you are; scrunchies, a perpetually dewy face courtesy of Mario Badescu facial sprays, Pura Vida bracelets, puka-shell necklaces, a Fjällräven backpack, and a sticker-covered Hydro Flask water bottle.
It's your new "Basic" girl.
They love taking photos on their insta stick camera, they care about the planet which is not a bad thing, and of course they have to use the VSCO app and (OG VSCO filters). And they use slang like "And I OOP" and "SKSKSKSKSK," which apparently is the new way to laugh at something.
They post on TIk-Tok, with videos dedicated to decorating water bottles with stickers, making friendship bracelets and accessorizing their arms with scrunchies, and they are always going to Starbucks.
So if you want to be a true VSCO girl, these are the things you will need and how much they will cost you.
1. Brandy Melville Tube Top $16.00
2. Oversize T'shirt preferably from Urban Outfitters $35.00
3. Bike shorts from Niki $30.00
4. Distressed jean shorts $60.00
5. Checkered Vans $50.00
6. Birkenstocks $99.95
7. Crocs $45.00
8. Tube socks to go with your Birkenstocks $8.00
Total $343.94
Then you have to add in their accessories.
Scrunchies up to 10 on your wrist at all times will cost you $18.00
Got to have that Puka Shell necklace that's around $9.00
Pura Vida Friendship bracelets will set you back $45.00
A FajallRaven backpack is between $75-$100
Hydroflask water bottle is $40
and, of course, the reusable straws are $9-$10
so for just the accessories will be $195.93
This does not include your apple iPods, and Apple watch, stickers, bracelet making kits, twinkle lights for your bedroom, a penny board, Polaroid camera, lip balm, Mario Badescu facial spray, and your Glossier cloud paint. With all those, your total to be a VSCO girl would be $1,217.75
That is so much money to spend just to be trendy! I understand wanting to be trendy but you don't need to spend this much on stuff just because others are. You don't need to spend $40 on a water bottle, you can use any reusable water bottle. You can still be trendy and be on a budget.
