Wake Up, Texas!

Be informed in state elections as well as national

Wake Up, Texas!

We had a lot to vote on in Texas this past Tuesday. In addition to the presidential race, we voted for the US House, Texas House, Railroad Commission, Board of Education, Texas Supreme Court, and way too many other courts to name them all here. The fact that many judges ran unopposed greatly simplified things, though, especially for lazy voters. The Supreme Court election may have been a little confusing, seeing as how both candidates had the last name Green, but it's simple enough when you consider that Green wins no matter what. Still, it's a lot to vote for, and some voters probably feel obligated to choose a candidate for every office on the ballot. Others either just don't know or care and will pick the first name on the list, even if that name is Deadpool or Puppy Monkey Baby.

Regardless of the reasons for lazy or ignorant voting, it's how we end up with the wrong people in office, a lesson the Travis County (the county that includes Austin) Republican Party is learning. The leadership is in an uproar over the election of Robert Morrow as their new chairman. Morrow has a head full of conspiracy theories about the Bushes, Clintons, and LBJ's role in the assassination of John F. Kennedy. On his Twitter feed, he calls former Texas governor Rick Perry a "bisexual adulterer," Barbara Bush a "drunk cuckold" who did porn, and the Republican National Committee a gay foam party (check Urban Dictionary if you need to). It's ironic that Governor Greg Abbott is among those who want to remove Morrow, considering that he fanned the flames of paranoia over Jade Helm 15.

Robert Morrow

Morrow's tweets are good for some laughs, but just imagine if Morrow had been elected to a position that matters. For some, that might be the State Board of Education, for which Mary Lou Bruner is campaigning for. The board is divided into fifteen districts and Bruner is the frontrunner District 9, which includes Houston County. Bruner believes the Grand Canyon could only have been formed by the Biblical flood, climate change is being caused by a shift from capitalism to socialism, and that President Obama was a gay prostitute who used his money to buy drugs in his twenties. It's not unusual for Board of Education members to be seemingly uneducated and out of their mind, but we should be more concerned when people like this may have influence over how we educate children.

Mary Lou Bruner

Our generation's solutions should not be to complain about how awful Texas is or move to California. Instead, we need to be better educated about what and for whom we're voting for in order to find better, more competent leadership at the state level.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
