Every four years there is an election for the United States presidency. This election is very different than that of past elections, though. There usually is one candidate that has support from the majority of the nation, or at least seems logical and is an OK choice to lead our country.
This year, however, it seems as if there is no logical or middle-ground choice. That is one of the many reasons why every person should go out and vote. Voting is a way to speak your opinion and exercise your national right to have a say in politics and political power.
Every year, voting and poll numbers go down, and fewer Americans vote and actually practice democracy. This is an important fact to know, and a fact all Americans should be aware of. The fewer Americans that go to the polls and vote, the less our democracy works.
In past government classes, there have been discussions about what would be too low of a number of voters in order to make democracy work. Out of all the American citizens, roughly 300,000,000, only about half go to the polls and vote. This may seem like a large amount, but the founders of America wanted and believed that all Americans would participate and create this democracy.
Democracy is a different type of government than that of others. It relies on the people and the citizens of the nation to keep it running and working. If the citizens of America don't show up to the polls and vote, then there is a likely chance that at some point in the distant future the democracy will no longer work.
As I said at the beginning of this article as well, this election year is different. Each candidate has no specific party that backs it. This makes this election up in the air. Some of the members of the Republican party don't support the Republican candidate, President Trump. Some of the members of the Democratic party don't support the Democratic candidate which would be Joe Biden.
Some of the usual party identifiers are choosing to vote for their opposing party's candidate this election. That's why every person's vote this year is extremely important, whether they are Republican, Democrat, White, Black, religious, or secular. Every person needs to vote and to take part in our democracy.
So go to the polls, get an absentee ballot, do whatever you need to do in order to cast your vote this November.
