In case you haven't seen the news, Planned Parenthood of Keystone, Pennsylvania tweeted out a now-since deleted tweet that stated: "We need a Disney princess who's had an abortion, we need a Disney princess who's pro-choice, we need a Disney princess who's an undocumented immigrant, we need a Disney princess who's actually a union worker, we need a Disney princess who's trans."
And quite frankly as a self-proclaimed feminist, I agree.
I am a strong believer that representation matters. This is why I also agree with the push towards having Elsa, the Disney ice princess from "Frozen," have a girlfriend in the next movie. Take the representation from "Black Panther" and "Wonder Woman": little girls saw themselves being represented on the big screen as a strong, powerful warrior through the Amazonians.
In "Black Panther," men and women of color alike saw a big screen superhero just like them. This is especially true for minority girls who saw the badass, genius inventions of Shuri in "Black Panther."
Another way that representation like this matters is seen through the $1 million donation by Disney to the Boys and Girl's club Science Technology Engineering and Math program so that all the future Shuris and T'Challa's can live out their dreams.
I think it's important for women to see themselves through different representations as children. The world is changing and so is Hollywood. As a strong believer in women's reproductive rights, I volunteer to be the first pro-choice Disney princess.
