What Virginians Know To Be True

Everyone living in Virginia knows so many different things about our wonderful state. I was born and raised her and I love our wonderful, loving state. Virginia is for lovers and I hope y'all will love this state even more.

1. There is beautiful scenery everywhere.

From Virginia Beach to the Luray Caverns, you can see just about anything in our state. We have parkways by rivers and parkways through mountains, wherever you want to go there is a scenic route to get there.

2. Benny's Pizza.

Even if you live in Virginia and have never heard of this, you have to try it. In Fredericksburg, Virginia there is a pizza place that sell 28 inch sized pies. One slice takes up two plates and it is so so good!

3. School's close for 2 inches of snow.

If you are originally from the North and ended up in the South, you will think this is totally ridiculous and that we're crazy, but we don't have the big snow plows or enough salt...but we do have sand!

4. You avoid I-95 at all costs.

Unless you really enjoy sitting in traffic, I-95 is not the place that you probably want to be. No matter what time you are planning on traveling, you are going to get stuck in traffic.

5. If it's too cold outside, school most likely will get a delay.

Schools don't want their students waiting out in the cold for the bus in the single digit or in-the-teen temps. Plus our students probably won't have the type of winter clothing that they need to be in the cold.

6. You've been to Jamestown, Yorktown, Colonial Williamsburg, Monticello, Mount Vernon, or a combination of these at least once.

Virginia is full of rich, old history. It was home of the first permanent English settlement and the birthplace of our presidents. Each of these locations were more than likely visited on grade school field trips.

7. If you're from Southern Virginia, you avoid Northern Virginia, or NOVA, at all costs.

NOVA has a whole different way of life and it is completely different from Southern Virginia's way of life. NOVA is near Washington, DC and is very urban, where Southern VA is mainly suburban.

8. You've been to Busch Gardens, Water Country USA, Kings Dominion, or a random zoo at least twice.

Whether you like roller coasters, water slides, or wild animals, there are multiple places in Virginia where you can go to get these thrills!

9. Big name colleges!

Virginia Tech, University of Virginia, James Madison University, College of William and Mary, Washington and Lee University, Virginia Military Institute, University of Mary Washington, Virginia Commonwealth University, and many, many more! You name what program you are looking for and there will most likely be a college or university in Virginia that has it.

10. It's where "lovers" live.

The saying "Virginia is for Lovers" was originally a campaign and it would vary based on where you were in the state. If you were at the beach, then "Virginia is for beach lovers." If you were in the mountains, then "Virginia is for mountain lovers." Virginia is the place where people come to celebrate and grow their love for all things - family, friends, history, art, music, and more. Come to Virginia, we'll have everything you could love, want, and need.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
