From the time I was in eighth grade, I knew I wanted to go to Virginia Tech.
Between the beautiful campus, the friendly students and Blacksburg itself, I couldn't wait to call it my home. I was so excited to move away from home and begin my college career, but I didn't know what it truly meant to be a Hokie until I experienced it. Here a few words of advice on what to get out of going to Virginia Tech.
Go to a sporting event. One of the best aspects of Virginia Tech is that we all come together as one to support each other. Jump to Enter Sandman at a football game, become a member of Cassell Guard, or go cheer on a baseball game. Either way, you'll be showing love to your fellow Hokies!
Join a club.
One of the most important things to never forget at Virginia Tech is that college isn't just about class. It's about extracurriculars and meeting new people while doing things you love. Joining Student Alumni Association or becoming a Hokie Ambassador are great ways to see what being a Hokie is all about.
Practice "Ut Prosim" every day.
Whether it's picking up trash and throwing it away, helping a stranded freshman find a specific building, or simply opening the door for someone else, practicing our motto, ut prosim, or, "that I may serve," is imperative in recognizing what it means to be part of the Hokie family. The Big Event is the largest community service project held on campus and it's a great experience. Not only does it show character, but it also shows your selflessness.
I feel so blessed to be a part of this wonderful place I call home. Although working towards a degree is why we're all here, there's so much more to being in college. It's the opportunity to make lifelong friends, step out of your comfort zone, chase your dreams and, most importantly, to follow your heart. We can't do this alone, and we can't do this with just anyone.
Hokies stand together. If I can leave you with one thing to remember -- once a Hokie, always a Hokie.
