What are the millennials mad about this week?
The answer can be any number of things, really. The price for avocados fluctuated again. They killed off another industry that played a pivotal role in adult society. The White House nearly passed legislation would've yanked out healthcare out from under the feet of million of people. (Healthcare which, by the way, should be somewhat of a basic human right.)
But what are we really mad about this week? Donald Trump's idle suggestion that transgender people not be allowed to serve in the military, simply because there is no money to allocate towards transition procedures.
(It is also, at this moment, just a suggestion, because it, like many of Trump's other horrid ideas, was spewed out to his robot followers in just under 140 characters.)
Let's go over some numbers. Currently, the budget for the Department of Defense is $824.7 billion. The current budget for the federal government is $4.094 trillion. Broken down, about a fifth of the entire federal budget gets spent on the military. And Trump means to say that nowhere in that fifth of a budget is there money to cover transition operations for those who put their lives on the line daily in order to serve their country. That there is no money to fund patriotism.
To fund those who are actually working to achieve his slogan - to "Make America Great Again", but by protecting it and giving it the opportunity to flourish and grow without worrying about invaders, from wherever they may come from. Nope. No room there. None, whatsoever.
It's estimated that providing aid to transitions would cost about $2.4 million and $8.4 million annually.
There are a lot of things that cost more than aiding in transitions. An F-35 fighter jet, according to the Washington Post. If one were to speculate, most likely the cost of ending hunger and homelessness in the United States. Putting four kids through private schools on a track to medical school. A condo in Manhattan, should it be exclusive enough.
And, surprisingly enough, a year's worth of Viagra - a nice, whopping $41.6 million.
Is the male ego really that fragile that it needs a nice, healthy dose of the blue pill just to feel normal? The "disruptions" that Trump spoke of? Is he sure that it isn't just Mike Pence whispering in his ear, telling him that the idea of trans people disgusts him (and actually, the whole of the LGBTQ+ spectrum disgusts him) and that knowing they serve is a disruption to his beauty sleep? With all of the turnovers and changes in the government, it wouldn't be much of a surprise to hear that this decision comes on the heels of someone else trying their hand at influencing him.
There is no reason the military should ban transgender people from serving in its ranks. The military hasn't sided with Trump, either, but the fact that such an idea has been put into the world - that trans troops would be any more different than cis ones - is a terrible reflection on the state of the White House as well as the state of the country.
