Fireworks are amazing, and there is nothing like them. But sometimes we forget there are people who hate them more than any skittish dog can. These people are many times Veterans or individuals who have defended our country, and still are.
PTSD is still ignored by many in the United States but can make holidays like this hell for them. What sounds to us like fireworks can translate into bombs and gun shots, just as a laser pointer could make them duck and roll.
We don't know what these individuals have gone through. And pressing them to say it will not help them either.
War is not a place where the predictable happens.
The things soldiers do can go from speakable to something they will never talk about.
What can you do instead? Sparklers are just as fun, and with the slow-mo feature on most cameras, you can write with them. It might take a few tries but it is worth it.
There are also different locations that offer shows miles away from housing areas. This reduces sound and entertains all who attend.
And if you really want to go on out, maybe say hello to your fellow veterans or spend some time with them. A simple thank you might make their day.
Oh, and, many could also try only shooting fireworks off on the night of the fourth after putting up warnings. Being courteous and providing your neighborhood with information ahead of time saves a lot of stress. This also allows anyone who is not a fan to leave the area for a little while.
So, this year, try to be more cognizant of those who might find our traditional celebrations a nightmare for themselves. Animals are not the only ones who have a reason to despise fireworks.
