Couples or not, there seems to be so much stress around Valentine's day. If you're a couple, you stress about plans and gifts you have to buy. If you're single, you stress and complain about being single.
Before you go on assuming this is another rant against Valentine's day or even a rant against those that are Anti-Valentine's day, let me tell you that it's not. I love Valentine's day and I think it's your choice in how you celebrate it, but it should never be something you have to do.
Instead, it should be something you want to do and continually do every day. You should want to show your love to other people whether it be friends, family, significant others, or even perfect strangers. The beauty of it is that you have the ability to show your love in so many different ways.
Some people don't get that chance on Valentine's Day, or any other day for that matter because the concept of love does not make sense to them. It does not exist to them. Now, this may apply to many different groups of people, but today, I am talking about those who are still enslaved in the world today.
Human trafficking profits over $150 billion dollars annually . Not only that, but there are currently over 40 million people in modern-day slavery still. Even one still enslaved is too many.
Too many people who have not yet been reached. Too many people who have not yet felt cherished or loved.
I love that Valentine's day is a reminder for us to love, but our capacity to love is not limited to one single day of the year. Now we don't have to be told about the origins of Valentine's day, but I would like for us to be reminded that the original Valentine's Day was about justice just as much as it was about love because St. Valentine took a stand against an unjust law created by Emperor Claudius.
While the issues in the world are not the same as they were many years ago, there is still so much injustice in the world. This holiday may not represent the same ideals of when it first started, but this doesn't mean that it can't be a renewed reminder of the injustice still left to be fought.
It shouldn't be a stressful day. Couples, enjoy each other's company. Singles, you are not alone, you are loved, and you have the ability to love those around you. However, you choose to celebrate Valentine's day, be reminded of the love we get to share and stand up for what you believe is just.
If you don't know where to start, start small knowing your words are important. A21's Love Gives is a mission to reach and love human trafficking victims. You can donate or send a card to a survivor. You can join the End It Movement. You can do many things to remind them that they are loved and not forgetten.
