It's officially one of the most dreaded times of year for those who are single. Post "cuffing season" means that most of your friends probably have boyfriends that they haven't stopped talking about yet and you haven't seen your roommate without her boyfriend in months. The month of February means being surrounded by hearts, stuffed animals, and flowers everywhere you go.
It's hard not to get bitter when you realize that you'll probably be spending Valentine's Day alone. From the couples walking around campus to the relentless Instagram posts, its hard to catch a break from all of the ~love in the air~.
But I think people get too caught up in the idea of Valentine's Day and when it comes down to it, the holiday does not live up to the hype. There is too much pressure for everything to be perfect. The food, the outfit, the guy. It is so easy to get stressed when you want the night to be exactly how you planned it. The reality of the situation is that very few people are going to have the perfect Valentine's Day.
Being single allows you to avoid the disappointment all together. Sure, you'll know in the back of your mind that it's Valentine's Day, but it's also a great time to show yourself some love. Maybe have a spa night and do a face mask or two. Or maybe you should have a wine night to yourself and watch a movie.
Take the time to relax and enjoy the peace while everyone else is out waiting hours for their food. Stay on your couch in a pair of sweatpants instead of throwing on a dress and heels. I doubt that anyplace that delivers will be crazy busy so take advantage of the short wait time.
I know it seems like nearly everyone is in a relationship right now, but I guarantee you know at least one other person who doesn't have plans. It's the perfect time to make more friends who you wouldn't normally hangout with and laugh about all of your crazy date stories. Breakups spike after Valentine's Day, so your life should be back to normal shortly.
Valentine's Day can also be a great time to find out who else is single, so go out on the town and see who all is out. More people are single than you may have thought. Valentine's Day at the bars is like Tinder in real life because nearly everyone in a relationship will be on a date.
So yeah, a lot of your friends may be in relationships, but being single is far more fun. There is no pressure to have that perfect day and you can literally have what ever you want to eat while laying on your couch in your sweatpants. Maybe your Valentine's Day will be filled with friends, or maybe just a little time on your own. Either way, it will be far more relaxed and enjoyable than going on a fancy, extravagant date.
