Yesterday, September 6, an article was published on Huffington Post, "There's a Brock Turner in all of o(UR) lives."
Cecila Carreras, a University of Richmond student, detailed a rape allegation and that "Spider Athletics has its own Brock Turner and Richmond’s administration did what it had to do to protect him." Even though the alleged rapist admitted to his rape, according to the article, he was still protected by the Richmond Athletics department.
The author stated Dean Fabian said, "I thought it was reasonable for him to penetrate you for a few more minutes if he was going to finish."
The Collegian published an article yesterday with the author providing a comment via email, "I really just want someone to say sorry. I always felt like they didn't believe me and held me to a higher standard than they did him."
However, an email was sent out to students at the University of Richmond today concerning the article on the Huffington Post. You can read the full email here.
"While we cannot address specifically the contentions in the recent Huffington Post commentary, given our commitment to student privacy, and we respect the right of all students to express their opinion and discuss their perspective, we think it is important for us to share that many of the assertions of fact are inaccurate and do not reflect the manner in which reports of sexual misconduct have been investigated and adjudicated at the University," read the email.
8News WRIC in Richmond covered it on its 5:00 news on Wednesday, but can also be read about here.
On Thursday at 6:30, the annual "It Ends Now: A Culture of Shared Responsibility" event will take place in the Alice Haynes Room at the University of Richmond.
"Representatives of several campus organizations will speak, and we will be there in support and solidarity. We hope to see you there. We will continue to alert you to other events we have planned, and also invite you to reach out to meet with us, to share other ideas, and to get involved. It is only through the shared efforts of our entire community, and open dialogue, that we can make a difference in our community."
