The world is constantly going through changes, and society is changing along with it.
Two years ago, I applied to GameStop to make extra money.
Months later, they called me and asked if I wanted to work as a Seasonal. I figured why not?!
I love playing video games, some of my closest friends have become my friends through some type of association with video games. It came down to the day of the interview, and I have never been so afraid of an interview before. There was one thought that constantly kept running through my mind, "Will I be hired even though I am a female?"
Long story short, I got the job! I worked my butt off and I had so much fun doing so! The people who hired me ended up becoming family to me. They were always there for me whether it was to teach me how to be better at my job, or that shoulder to cry on when drama was taking over me.
As time goes on, it becomes time for managers to move to other stores.
I was so saddened to see my managers move to other stores. They were always there for me when all the creeps would hit on me at GameStop, or for the people who asked me if I actually played video games.
A store full of male employees became my brothers, they were always there for me like brothers. It was the guests that I always have to worry about. I went through many managers over the two years, some were super great and were added to my brothers, some just did not care.
I watched the company go from being one of the few females in a store in my district, to being one of four females to work in my store. I noticed the larger amount of girls coming in to buy video games.
I also noticed a lot of males coming in and learning to respect and understand that girls can play video games too. I can't wait to see men, women, anyone, to come together and be able to talk about video games together without any judgment.
Seeing the small but growing amount of women coming into GameStop looking for video games, and being excited to pick up their new favorite games. It is so cool to see how games, in general, are growing, that a lot more people are able to come in and talk about their games with us associates.
I have never loved working somewhere so much, I love my co-workers, and I love how they are always there for me no matter what. So, even though it is scary to be a girl in a "boys" world, it is still so fun.
Always love what you want to love, and don't be afraid of weird things you may be into. The right place will gladly accept who you are no matter what.
So like video games, like magic cards, like all the weird boy things, because we should live happy and free of fear of judgment.
