As 2016 is still in its early months, there are nine months left for many new artists to be discovered, singles to be released, and albums to be produced. When looking at rock specifically, 2015 definitely made a mark with the indie, folk, and alternative rock albums that were released. With Hozier’s "Hozier," Mumford and Son’s "Wilder Mind," Coldplay’s "A Head Full of Dreams," and Alabama Shake’s album of the year, "Sound & Color," just as a few examples, one can only feel excited about the albums we will be looking back on once 2016 is over. With that being said, here are some /indie/folk/alternative rock albums that you should expect to be released in 2016.
1. The Lumineers (Folk Rock)
Coming out in just a few short days on April 8, The Lumineers are ready to release their newest album titled "Cleopatra." This is only the band’s second studio album, but with the success of their first record I can only imagine that this album will surpass the previous one. Since they started out with a great amount of recognition for their first album, I believe that this band will go even farther than they already have if they continue to develop and present their unique, folky, and lovable sound. The album is already available for pre-order and two new songs, "Cleopatra" and "Ophelia," are accessible for fans to listen to. By the sounds of these two singles, the band seems to be taking their music to the next level.
2. Red Hot Chili Peppers (American Rock)
While there isn’t a specific release date yet, the Red Hot Chili Peppers are said to be releasing a new album in 2016. It’s been five years since their last album, which obviously means that they are long overdue for some new music. The band has been working with Radiohead producer Nigel Goodrich and already has the next year lined up spots at numerous music festivals beginning on April 24. Personally, I believe that the Red Hot Chili Peppers are one of today’s most talented bands. The band claims they are heading into a new era, and I cannot wait to hear what they have in store.
3. The Head and the Heart (Indie Folk)
Being my favorite band, I will admit that I am most excited about the announcement of The Head and the Heart’s upcoming album. There is not a specific release date yet, but the band continues to post updates on their website and Instagram showing that they are getting closer towards finishing their latest album. The band’s first album was released in 2011 and their second one in 2013. It is extremely difficult not to fall in love with their song styles, harmonies, and lyrics. Their second album definitely showed a growth from their first, and I envision that their upcoming album will be taken to the next level. The band stated that they are planning another tour yet had to share the devastating news that band member, Josiah Johnson (vocals, guitar, percussion), will not be touring with them with his recent battles with addiction and working towards his recovery.
4. Haim (Pop Rock)
This sister trio recently announced that they have been working on new music in the studio which should be expected to be released during 2016. The band’s debut album "Days Are Gone" was released in 2013 and is filled with such unique, fresh, and lovable songs. The band announced more tour dates, which means that we should be expecting new music any minute now. Having an all girl band has not been as common, and I can’t begin to explain how much I love their sound and overall vibe. Haim as definitely made a statement in the music scene, and I believe they will continue to make their mark with their future music.
5. The Killers (American Rock)
While this one is less concrete if it will be released in the year 2016, it can definitely be confirmed that The Killers are working on their fifth studio album. They are still in the process of writing and recording new songs, but it is estimated that the album could be released anywhere between 2016 and 2017. It was revealed that fans could expect a new sound, which is always really exciting when a band suddenly takes a new turn with their music. Lead vocalist Brandon Flowers claims that The Killers are going for a more "powerful rock vibe," which is an extremely broad description and could go in many directions. Regardless, The Killers have not failed to produce incredible songs in their past four albums, and being one of the best concerts I’ve ever seen, I am extremely looking forward to the new sound they hope to create and produce.
Even though most of these bands haven’t released any hints or demos of what these albums are going to sound like, I am definitely looking forward to hearing what these big names have in store. Keep an eye out on iTunes and at your local record shop for the moment these albums are available for sale and get ready to look back on 2016 as an incredible year for indie/folk/alternative rock music.
