On December 3rd, the College Playoff Committee released who was "in." The top 6 teams are as follows:
1. Clemson
2. Oklahoma
3. Georgia
4. Alabama
5. Ohio State
6. Wisconson
This is by far the most difficult and controversial playoff season.
This is due to a couple of things, but most notably is ranking Alabama above Ohio state. Unlike the other three teams in the top 4, Bama has an 11-1 record, while the others have a 12-1 record. Ohio State is 11-2, a very respectable season, but this is the playoffs we're talking about here. It's just as much how many losses you have and who you lose too. Alabama's single loss came against a 6th ranked Auburn football team.
This denied them their undefeated season and a conference title, but well get to that shortly. Ohio State's 2 losses came against a 5th ranked Oklahoma, but more importantly, an unranked Iowa. That game, it looked like Ohio State never got off the bus, and were blown out by the Hawkeyes 55-24. That game was in week 9, and that's one reason why Alabama was ranked higher than them.
But what about a conference title? To the committee, it matters a lot. Of the top 6 teams, 4 of them are conference champions. Alabama and Wisconson were undefeated going into their title games. Alabama lost to Auburn in the SEC title game, while Wisconson lost to Ohio State.
There are so many things to compare between Alabama and Ohio State. But at the end of the day, this is how it is. Personally, I think they got it right.
But there are some great things to come from OSU being put at #5 and in the Cotton Bowl. They will face an 11-2 USC team (the Trojans not the Gamecocks). This is huge for the Trojans to really prove to the committee that they made a mistake in not choosing them. They are a strong PAC-12 team, and they have a lot to prove against OSU.
But this sets up something that I think Reece Davis says the best "This sets us up for Alabama vs Clemson, part 3." This series has seen the Clemson Tigers face off against the Alabama Crimson Tide in two national title games, which is tied 1-1.
This is set to be one of the most interesting CFB playoffs in its 4-year history.
