Calvin Harris has somewhat become the Quincy Jones of EDM with his smorgasbord of noteworthy features like Jones did famously and extremely successfully on his classic jazz/R&B/pop hybrid The Dude LP. In a similar tradition, and boldly showcasing everyone from Rihanna to Florence Welch- even Ne-Yo and Kelis, Harris captured global attention with his famed 18 Months album - which had eight top 10 singles in the UK making it beat a record previously set by Michael Jackson.
This time around, Harris is showing off his chops with Louisiana-bred singer/songwriter/rapper Frank Ocean and Georgia-based hip hop trio Migos. These artists are all recently reaching new levels of heightened fame. Ocean is still surfing the wave of his chart-topping 2016 “Blonde” album, and Migos continues riding high on the ubiquity of their hit “Bad & Boujee” plus their fabulous shout-out from actor/rapper/songwriter Donald Glover at the 2017 Golden Globes after Glover's FX show “Atlanta” won for best comedy. No wonder Harris had to tap these gentlemen for his new 2017 “Slide” single.
“Slide” starts of with Harris’ signature melodic house piano melodies. It's a great prelude to another perfect pop/EDM concoction from the masterful DJ/producer. Ocean’s nonchalant yet captivating vocal delivery style suits the suave swagger of this latest electronica anthem. Questioning someone acting some type of way, Ocean asks “do you slide on all your nights like this?” as Harris’ 4x4 house/dance grooves gently chug along. Flexing their rap voices, Migos adds a nice complement to “Slide” giving it some edgy, Southern hip hop flair.
EDM continues to unite artists from all kinds of places on the music spectrum. “Slide” is definitely one of those tracks that's a case in point. The song provides listeners with a trifecta of Harris’ radio-friendly EDM, Ocean’s avant-garde guard brand of R&B and the idiosyncratic rap stylings of Migos. It all works for sure.
