The United Nations (UN) was formed to foster peace around the world and promote cooperation among various nations for various initiatives. The United Nations was created after World War II led various leaders to call for the formation of a new international organization that was stronger than the previous League of Nations that was promulgated after World War I. Many felt that the League of Nations failed at its main mission of preventing another world war by not being strong enough. As a result, the UN was formed with the various post-World War II concerns in mind, including the rise of nuclear weapons and the Holocaust.
The UN's main body is the General Assembly, which includes over 193 member states that have equal representation with one vote per nation. Resolutions that are not deemed important require only a simple majority to pass whereas "important" resolutions require a two-thirds vote among the General Assembly members. A major source of conflict within the UN structure is the veto powers of the Security Council.
The Security Council consists of five permanent members, including the United States, China, France, Great Britain and Russia. Even if 192 members vote to approve a certain resolution, it takes just one veto from any of the security council to reject a resolution. Some critics have argued that the structure of the Security Council does not let crucial resolutions to pass as it may negatively impact one of the Security Council members.
The Economic and Social Council is responsible for the coordination of the UN's various social and economic programs. The judicial body of the UN is the International Court of Justice that hears issues between various states and can only depend on the consent of the states that are involved in a certain case. The Secretariat contains the civil servants who work for the UN in administrating the various social and economic programs that the international organization has. The Secretary-General of the UN serves a the head an representative of the Secretariat. The UN can ask to collaborate with various non-government organizations such as the Human Rights Watch to further achieve its goals.
