"Never be afraid to raise your voice for honesty and truth and compassion against injustice and lying and greed. If people all over the world would do this, it would change the earth." - William Faulkner
There are nearly 157 million people in America who are part of the workplace, and almost all of them have at one time or another have either witnessed or experienced unfairness in the workplace by either the boss or another coworker. Not only that they have also witnessed a bias that was very much visible to everyone around. Unfortunately this is extremely common in the workplace environment across all career fields from medical to technology to education.
A coworker comes in constantly late with the smell of alcohol on their breath but the boss never reprimands them, instead they encourage it. Another coworker does nothing but gossips, even gossips with the doctors and the board of directors just turns a blind eye. A doctor flirts with everything with legs, even goes far to even harass them and everyone sweeps it under the rug to avoid a lawsuit. A manager is being bullied out of their position by another coworker who is on a power trip, and in the process they end up bullying others into siding with them while also manipulating the boss into believing whatever comes out of their mouth. Or a manager emails an employee and calls them every derogatory name under the sun just because they were gay, and when the employee forwards the email to the higher up everything gets swept under the rug and the manager doesn't get fired. These are real examples from several people that I've had the chance to talk to, and honestly these are the best (more likely the worst) examples of what really goes on behind the closed doors of the workplace. But why doesn't anyone stand up to this type of treatment? Why doesn't anyone stop this? There are many reasons as to why no one would say anything to the boss, the board of directors, or even the CEO, but the major reason for those who do not say anything is to keep their own job. It sounds very strange, but in fact there have been some cases where a person was fired for standing up to the unfairness and injustice that was taking place in the workplace This is unfortunately a common thing that has happened time and time again. But in the end there are some cases where they are taken to court for unlawful termination and things go down the drain real fast.
So, what can we do as a society to make the workplace more of a safe haven from home and make it a fair environment? There are multiple ways for everyone to contribute, for instance, bosses and other higher ups, including the CEO's can stop with the biases and treat all of the employees fairly. I'm sure most of you are shaking your head and saying, "You're living in a fairy tale." But I promise that it is not that hard to treat others fairly and not play favoritism. Another way to make it a fair environment is to make sure that gossiping, mistreatment, and bullying is eliminated by all of the employees that work for the company. And if anything like that were to ever pop up, it needs to be brought to the closest supervisor immediately to have it taken care of.
The one thing that seems to be the commonality among all of these injustices is due to the fact that many people in the workplace tend to act like teenagers instead of the adults that they are. There have been cases where people who are in their fifties acting like a fifteen year old bully, and a twenty-two year old acting like a ungrateful spoiled child instead of acting like their age and treating others with the respect that they deserve. But unfortunately we cannot force people to change and act their age, however, there are other ways to deal with those kind of people starting with verbal warning, to all the way of termination. It sounds rough, but sometimes when there are people making an environment toxic and less fun to come to then it creates a high turnover and people making many complaints to not only the higher ups of their companies or the media.
