With the number of pop artists currently in the music scene, it is impossible to hear every great pop artist—especially considering that there are only a select few who are talked about, and even then some of their lesser-known music is better than the mainstream songs we all know and love.
Here are 6 insanely underrated pop artists to listen to when you're in a music slump:
After disappearing from the music industry for eight agonizingly long years, Robyn returned in 2018 with "Honey." Known for combining sad lyrics with upbeat, electropop club beats, Robyn sets herself apart from much of mainstream pop. Songs by Robyn that I recommend are "Dancing On My Own" and "Missing U."
2. Charli XCX
Charli XCX was definitely right when she tweeted this in January 2018. She has co-written songs for more well-known artists such as Selena Gomez and Iggy Azalea, but the spotlight is often focused more on her collaborators than on herself. Make sure to check out "5 In The Morning" as well as "Boys" and "1999" to give Charli a well-deserved listen!
3. Marina Diamandis
Marina (previously known as Marina and the Diamonds) is criminally underrated. She was dabbling with American flags way before artists like Lana Del Rey adopted the aesthetic (check out "Hollywood" to see what I mean). This indie pop artist's fourth studio album, "Love + Fear," is set to be released on April 26th of this year. In the meantime, songs I recommend by Marina are "How to Be a Heartbreaker," "Superstar," "Orange Trees," and "Primadonna!"
4. Sky Ferreira
Sky Ferreira was introduced to me by my awesome friend Lily last summer. Despite not having a large discography, Sky has become one of my favorite artists. She hasn't released music since 2013, but her next album, "Masochism," is set for release this Spring! The song that really got me hooked on Sky is "Lost In My Bedroom," although I also love "Everything Is Embarrassing" and "24 Hours."
5. Carly Rae Jepsen
I'm sure you're familiar with Carly Rae Jepsen's hit song "Call Me Maybe," but she has a lot of other music that is heavily overlooked! Her album "Emotion" is amazing and definitely not something to be ignored. She deserves more than to be a one-hit-wonder, so I recommend giving her a chance by listening to "Party For One," "Cut To The Feeling," and "Run Away With Me!"
6. Allie X
I can thank Spotify for randomly playing "Little Things" by Allie X one day when I was studying. That song is so, so good! Allie X is probably the least recognized artist on this list, but just as deserving as the others of some recognition! Her album, "Super Sunset," doesn't have a lot of tracks on it, but each of them are amazing. "Girl of the Year" and Science" are two that I recommend!
