Under the Rose-Scene One

This is the opening scene from an original play, Under the Rose.

This is the beginning of a play I'm developing. I would like to share a scene each week and see what others think. I'll share a brief overview. The show opens with a female artist, Isa, and her companion, Cheyenne. They frequently play a local bar where a music producer trying to gain prestige hears them and invites them to join his other artists at his studio. Is this a good move for the two females?

ACT I SCENE i

SETTING

Evening, local club

ANNOUNCER

And now ladies and gentleman, please welcome Isa and Cheyenne!

ISA

DO YA?

CHEYENNE

YES I BELIEVE IN ME

ISA

YES I BELIEVE IN ME

ISA steps down from the makeshift stage and is stopped by a man.

ISA

Excuse me, sir.

MR. BLACKWELL

No, excuse me miss. Allow me to introduce myself as your new agent.

ISA

My agent? You must be joking sir.

MR. BLACKWELL

This is no joke ma’am. You see, I was sitting at that back table-

CHEYENNE steps down behind Isa.

ISA

Please forgive my disbelief.

CHEYENNE

Mr. Blackwell a pleasure to see you tonight.

MR. BLACKWELL

-Yes it is. As I was saying. Your performance was wonderful and I wanted to offer you two ofthe four spots I have for a band I’m forming under my new label.

ISA

That’s nice, but I think I’ll-

CHEYENNE

We’d be happy to fill the two spots in your band. Do you have a name?

MR. BLACKWELL

That’s still to be determined, Miss…

CHEYENNE

Cheyenne. And the lead singer tonight is Isa.

MR. BLACKWELL

A pleasure to meet both of you ladies. As I was saying-

ISA

Forgive me again for cutting you off, but our names were announced as we took the stage. So unless you have a serious offer for us I’d like to hit the bar before I-

MR. BLACKWELL

Isa, please, hear me out. I honestly have a band I’m ready to sign to my label. Your work is catchy and you have a beautiful voice. And Cheyenne your skills on the guitar are phenomenal. You would be a perfect fit.

ISA hesitates.

MR. BLACKWELL

Think about it this way. You’ll be working with a top notch manager who knows the ins and outs of the business.

CHEYENNE

It would be the chance of a life time.

MR. BLACKWELL

That’s the spirit. Come on down to the studio tomorrow to meet the guys.

He hands them a card.

ISA

One question before I agree to this meeting. What’s the catch?

MR. BLACKWELL

Why, my dear, there’s no catch. Just the chance to be paid for your work that you love.

ISA

There’s always a catch.

MR. BLACKWELL

Here’s the catch: the reality of your wildest dream coming true.

CHEYENNE

The fame. The lights.

ISA

The papparazzi.

MR. BLACKWELL

Yes, the price of fame. And the price of your dreams.

He begins to walk away

ISA

Mr. Blackwell?

He turns back toward them.

MR. BLACKWELL

At your service. We’ll meet tomorrow at the studio to meet the band and see how you blend. I have no doubt it will be fantastic.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
