Most know UNC Wilmington as the "beach school" of North Carolina, and it's true; Wrightsville Beach is a quick 15 minute drive! It makes Fridays and weekends much more fun than the average college, I've got to admit. However, with Hurricane Matthew heading right towards it, we have been forced to evacuate right as fall break is beginning. If you're a student as UNCW, or maybe another school that's getting evacuated because of Hurricane Matthew, here's some thoughts you might be having right about now.
1. Well, I was going home for fall break anyways... perfect timing!
2.Does this mean midterms are cancelled?
3. Matthew was an apostle; how bad could he be?
4. Who's down for a pre-hurricane party before the evacuation starts?
5. BRB, going to buy floaties and a canoe!
6. Wait... can my bed be used as a flotation device?
You know, in case it randomly starts before we're evacuated.
7. During a Hurricane, does one buy milk and bread like when it snows?
8. Okay, let's NOT swim in the amphitheater this year...
This time last year when UNCW flooded, students literally went swimming in the amphitheater. Let's just say it didn't end well.
9. What show should I binge-watch on Netflix during this surprisingly-long fall break?
10. Speaking of which, what happens if the hurricane is still going when I'm supposed to be driving home? Are we going to have an extended fall break?
My RA said that we should be prepared to not be home until next Thursday (10/13). So, yes, an extended fall break is more than likely going to happen.
In reality, I hope that everyone in the path of Hurricane Matthew stays safe. This is not something to play around with as it's now a Category 5. I heard that a few colleges in South Carolina are already closing, too, and right now it's expected for the eye of the hurricane to be over Wilmington. Have gas in your car, have bottles of water and non-perishable foods, and know your evacuation routes. Please, please stay safe!
Special shout out to my amazing Wake County team who came up with most of these thoughts when they heard of my school's evacuation. You guys always make me laugh!
