This is a fictitious letter that I created after reading Columbus' journal. It is from the perspective of Juan Sanchez, a physician aboard the Santa Maria. The details of this piece are merely creative; I'm not even sure if this man definitely existed or if he even had a sister. I just wanted to tell a story!

Tu hermano, Maestre Juan Sanchez

My Dear Sister,

The days are long and frightening. Seventy-four days have passed since our departure from our precious homeland of Spain. Though I wanted to experience the excitement of adventure on this journey, I now find myself longing to return home to my family.

The young men behave like bewildered animals, interpreting everything they see as a possible sign of land.

In the earlier hours of the morning, they saw both terrestrial animals and aquatic animals. They were ecstatic and began to dance and sing, while our captain encouraged the madness.

They remind me of the times when we were kids, and our mother allowed us to have a piece of candy after dinner. Do you remember the way we would laugh and sing? We thought the candy was a marvel because it was a symbol of our good behavior and showed prosperity in our family's finances.

The men with their seagulls and whales are as you and me with the sweets when we were little. Those signs of firm ground represent all the hope and energy that they have while exploring the sea.

A minority of the individuals aboard the ship are ill. Many of the crew men's gums are flowing with intense, red streams of blood. Their bodies get tired; lethargy lingers in the air of the ship. I don't know the cure or the sickness. I always recite a prayer for each patient and advise him to rest. I don't have any medicine on the boat to fight the problem.

It seems that I am enduring loneliness without a reason. My heart feels empty and hopeless. As I am unsure of how to cure their illnesses, I feel that I am neglecting my primary duty aboard the ship. Wish me luck, and pray that I can find the symbol of hope that the other men seem to have already found.

I will write to you, my precious sister, again in the future. Give mother a kiss, and give father my valuable word that I will soon return home.

Hope to hear from you soon.

With Much Love and Blessings,

Your Brother, Juan

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
