Summer's here and what better way to celebrate than crank up the tunes? I have compiled a list of the best songs that will get you in the summer mood, poolside, campfire side, outside, or inside, this playlist will satisfy your craving for summer jams.
"Wildfire" by John Mayer from Paradise Valley (2013)
The perfect song for a summer romance, with an Allman Brothers Band/ Zac Brown Band sound, this song just sounds like summer.
Best Lyric: "'Cause a little bit of summer's what the whole years all about."
"Schools Out" by Alice Cooper from Schools Out (1971)
The original. The classic. The only song appropriate to scream at the top of your lungs as you run out of your school as you toss a year's work of papers into the summer air. This song will always be cheesy and perfect to celebrate the coming of summer.
Best Lyric: “Out for summer, out till fall, we might not come back at all!”
"Cool For The Summer" by Demi Lovato from Confident (2015)
The lead single from Demi Lovato’s 2015 L.P. Confident perfectly captures summer’s explorative spirit. This aggressive, synth driven track introduced a newer, sexier Demi to the world, and it may be the catchiest song of hers to date.
Best Lyric: “Take me down into your paradise, don’t be scared, cause I’m your body type”
"Summer Of '69" by Brian Adams from Reckless (1984)
Another classic on our list. I would bet money that at some point or another, you’ve heard this song that is the textbook definition of summer nostalgia.
Best Lyric: “Oh, when I look back now, that summer seemed to last forever.”
"Summer Friends" by Chance the Rapper from Coloring Book (2016)
A fresh song from Chance the Rapper, this track starts a capella, and features a hook remembering his summer friends, singing “summer friends don’t last”. If you’re missing the fun and glory of past summers, this track will serve as your best friend.
Best Lyric: “Our summer don’t get no shine no more, our summer die, our summer time don’t got no time no more.
"King of The Beach” by Wavves from King of The Beach (2010)
This angst-filled surf rock track from the San Diego rock outfit “Wavves” is a perfect jam for anyone who genuinely is annoyed by the beach environment and the sunburn that goes along with it.
Best Lyric: “Let the sun burn back my eyes, let it burn my back, let it sear through my thighs.”
"Summertime Sadness (Remix)" by Lana Del Rey & Cedric Gervais from Summertime Sadness [Lana Del Rey vs. Cedric Gervais] (Cedric Gervais Remix) (2013)
Sometimes summer is hard for people. Being home, losing a lover, or other circumstances can make summer... well, sad. If that's you, Lana's got your back on this brooding hit, remixed by Cedric Gervais to make this a perfect driving tune.
Best Lyric: “Kiss me hard before you go, summertime sadness.”
"Summer Nights" by John Travolta, Olivia Newton-John, and the Motion Picture Cast of Grease from Grease (1978)
A classic for the musical theatre kid in all of us (especially myself). In this song, Danny and Sandy (Travolta and Newton-John) recount their summers with each other to their respective groups of friends.
Best Lyric: “Summer sun, something’s begun, but oh, oh those summer nights.”
"California Gurls" by Katy Perry feat. Snoop Dogg from Teenage Dream (2010)
This shiny synth pop track from Katy Perry is just as catchy as it is seductive. Katy dominates the song with Snoop Lion (formerly Snoop Dogg) rapping lyrics so blatantly sexual, its laughable. Nonetheless, this song from 2010’s Teenage Dream is perfect for our playlist.
Best Lyric: “You could travel the world, but nothing comes close to the golden coast.”
“Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa” by Vampire Weekend from Vampire Weekend (2008)
The always unique Vampire Weekend supplies a song perfect for summer romance. Kwassa, a Congo dance rhythm, and Cape Cod, a popular vacation spot combine perfectly in this track, with squeaky clean guitars, fun bongos, and an indie sound perfect for our playlist.
Best Lyric: “Can you stay up to see the dawn in the colors of Benetton?”
"Summertime" by DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince from Homebase (1991)
This chill song from the hip hop duo of DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince (Jeff Townes and Will Smith) epitomizes the feeling of being on the market during the summer. Smith’s lyrics and delivery are fire on top of Townes’ catchy beats.
Best Lyric: "It's like the summer is a natural aphrodisiac."
"Island In The Sun" by Weezer from Weezer (Green Album) (2001)
Another surfy track on our list, but much less angst driven than “King Of The Beach”, “Island In The Sun” is my favorite jam on the way to the beach. Almost lazy but still a great song for summer, this song is simple, and fun.
Best Lyric: “Hip, hip”
“Summer Song” by Forever The Sickest Kids from Forever The Sickest Kids (2011)
A self explanatory song from Forever The Sickest Kids, this track is perfect for the ending of summer, but wanting to keep the love found in the 3 month period we know as summer.
Best Lyric: “This summer’s a one to remember, so what are you waiting for?”
"Summer Love" by Justin Timberlake from FutureSex/LoveSounds (2006)
THE summer song of 2006, Justin Timberlake's synth-y, scorching "Summer Love" was playing at some point at just about every pool party I was at that summer. Whether it’s a summer fling, or true summer love, this song will get you in the spirit of love for summer.
Best Lyric: “The summers over for the both of us, but that doesn’t mean we should give up on love.”
“Born In The U.S.A.” by Bruce Springsteen from Born In The U.S.A. (1984)
Something about summer feels patriotic. On the surface, the titular track from Bruce Springsteen’s 1984 hit L.P Born In The U.S.A. creates the perfect feeling for a 4th of July cookout, yet the lyrics reveal a more critical view of America from the eyes of a war veteran, making this song almost anti-patriotic, especially through the ironic and iconic hook. Not to mention the iconic album artwork!
Best Lyric: “I was born in the U.S.A.”`
“Springsteen” by Eric Church from Chief (2011)
Speaking of Springsteen, Eric Church’s summer anthem captures the essence of why the Boss is on this playlist. This sparkly county track captures the nostalgia of the perfect summer songs and the memories associated with them.
Best Lyric: “Funny how a melody sounds like a memory, like a soundtrack to a July Saturday night, Springsteen.”
“The Boys Of Summer” by Don Henley from Building The Perfect Beast (1984)
It’s safe to say at this point in the playlist that 1984 was a great year for music, especially summer songs. Don Henley’s top hit perfectly captures what its like to fight for summer love, after summer is over.
Best Lyric: “I can tell you my love for you will still be strong, after the boys of summer have gone.”
“California Girls” by the Beach Boys from Summer Days (And Summer Nights!!) (1965)
The second “California Girls” on our list, but with good reason. This classic Beach Boys song that makes every non Cali girl jealous clearly shows where Katy Perry got her inspiration for her song, 45 years later.
Best Lyric: “The West coast has the sunshine, and the girls all get so tanned.”
