Now don’t get me wrong, I am not a complete expert on piercings but I’d like to believe that my 16 piercings have given me some knowledge that I can share. The reality is that piercings can be addictive and sometimes we get too focused on the piercing itself and not the aftercare. Getting a piercing is more than just going to a shop and have a needle jammed in you, getting one involves caring for a wound and keeping any type of infection from occurring. These are some tips that I have learned from my experience with my piercings that can hopefully help you on your next piercing.
1. Know what piercing you want ahead of time.
Go in with your head set on a piercing and don't let anyone change your mind or make you think your piercing isn't good enough. If you want a specific piercing go for it.
2. Be picky about the place you are going to get your piercing at.
I get it, sometimes if you can’t or won’t spend money on a piercing you arrive at some sketchy places. But sometimes these places don’t use sterile equipment or jewelry. If your going to get a piercing, expect to pay a little more at a reputable, yet safe, place.
3. Eat before getting your piercing.
If you don't eat, you risk feeling woozy or even fainting. Also try not to consume alcohol before your piercing, seeing as it can cause more bleeding than usual.
4. Ask questions.
Ask your piercer all the questions you could think of. No question is stupid. Remember to ask about aftercare, healing time, the gauge size of the jewelry, and the contact information of the piercer.
5. Make sure you like the placement.
Regardless of the type or location of the piercing, make sure that you like where the piercer will be piercing you because once that jewelry is in there is nothing the piercer can do.
6. Say no to the piercing gun!
If someone tries to pierce you with a piercing gun do me a favor and runaway. Trust me even lobe piercings done with piercing guns don't heal properly, I say that from experience.
7. Follow the piercer’s instructions and tips.
The best tip any piercer gave me was to leave my piercing alone the most I could and it would heal. Piercers are usually right and it is important to listen to them and remember you can always go back to them with any doubts or problems.
8. Tip the piercer.
I have a friend to thank for this one. I wasn't one to tip my piercer but my friend made me realize that tipping the piercer not only shows appreciation for their art but also helps pay their bills.
9. Baby your new piercing.
If there is one thing I have learned from my 16 piercings it is that they like to be babied. Touch it the least you can and don't play with it!
10. Relax.
Piercings have their ups and downs. Trust me I can’t even count on one hand the issues I have had with my piercings. Irritation, swelling, the dreaded “bump.” But with patience it all works out at the end.
11. Show it off!
Show off your piercing, show the world the wonderful new addition you have because the piercing will never look as good on anyone else like it does on you.
