The Ultimate Guide To College Tours
Florida State University

Alright, here’s an extremely long list of things to consider on your campus visit. Yes, it's probably way too long, and you don’t need to ask every single question and some are much more important than others, but knowing the answers will ultimately help you make your college decision. Knowing these questions ahead of time will help you catch things your tour guide says, find information in pamphlets/handouts, or just notice things around campus.

Keep an eye out to see if this campus has what you want- whether it’s huge deal breakers or small details. Make sure to tell your tour guide what you’re interested in and they can tailor parts of the tour specifically to you as well as talk more in depth about what the college has to offer your interests. Ask about specific programs you’re interested in such as theater, choir, chemistry, etc. If the tour guide doesn’t touch on specific topics you’re wondering about, be sure to ask. If you forget to ask something, or are still curious once you get home from your tour, research it on the school’s website.

After every college visit, write down your initial thoughts. You can make a list of exciting details that caught your attention, as well as some concerns you have. Making a list of pros and cons can also help you compare schools further down the decision-making process.

Residential Life

Am I required to live on campus? For how long?

Are there any room restrictions on things like pets, toasters, lights, etc.?

Is laundry free?

Is printing free?

What are visiting hours and policies?

Are freshmen allowed to have cars on campus? How much are parking permits?

Are dorms/floors coed?

If you live far away can you move in early? What about summer storage options?

Do the dorms have elevators?

What off-campus housing options are available?

What are the cost differences in living options?

Academics

What scholarships are available?

Do you get to pick advisors?

Is there a minimal ACT or SAT score required for admission?

What is the required score for AP class credit?

How many credits can I transfer in?

What are average class sizes for both gen eds and major specific courses?

Is attendance required for most classes?

What is the typical course load for each semester?

Does overloading credits cost extra?

How many credits are needed to graduate?

Is a language class required?

Are any fitness classes required?

Do any programs require audition or interview?

Is there an academic support center that helps with internships, job searching, resumes, graduation requirements, etc.?

What are the work study options?

Are night classes common?

Campus

How big is campus? Is everything within walking distance?

Is there transportation available?

Are campus events like athletic games or play productions free for students?

Is the cafeteria buffet style or a la carte?

Are there a variety of caf options to cater to my needs? Ex: vegan, gluten free, etc.

Is the fitness center free?

Are there any on-campus restaurants?

Are there any religious groups or daily chapel?

Do many people bike?

How is the wifi access/strength?

What are the intramural options?

How is the environmental impact? Does campus have adequate compost/recycling options?

Is there an on-campus clinic or health care options available?

What is the school’s mascot? What are the school colors?

Are there any counseling services available?

Obviously, you’re not going to care about every answer and most of them won’t make or break your college decision. But if you can go through this list and pick out what qualities are most important to you, you can easily narrow down schools and filter out the ones that wouldn’t be a good fit.

Good luck!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
