It is finally time for all Gusties to head back to campus! Whether you are a first year or a senior, here are 23 things that you should do during the 2017-2018 school year:

1. Take a sign pic.

Is it actually possible to go to Gustavus and not take a sign pic?

2. Participate in Campus-Wide Capture The Flag.

This year, capture the flag will be played from 1-3 PM on Sunday, September 17th between two large teams. Participants must meet at Sesquicentennial Plaza to sign up for teams and learn the rules!

3. Go "mocking" in the Arb.

Grab some friends and a hammock and go "hang out" in the Arb!

4. Spray paint the rock.

Ahh, the well-known spray-painted rock outside of Old Main. The current rock has been there since 1967 (the original rock was there as early as 1938) and gets painted hundreds of times each year, typically at night. Why not add to the tradition?!

5. Take on "Death Hill."

Give it a go at your own risk. First years, if you don't know about "Death Hill" now, you will later... trust me.

6. Have a "Frost-Your-Own."

You must.

7. Take on the Homecoming football game with your friends.

A football game, your friends, and SO much Gustie spirit! What else could you want?

8. Play an intramural sport.

There are so many options! Check them out and give one a try!

9. Go "Traying."

What's better than sliding down the Old Main hill on a Caf tray? Nothing.

10. Go to "Christmas In Christ Chapel."

Taking place in Christ Chapel on December 1st at 7:30 p.m, and December 2nd, and 3rd at 3:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

"A tradition since 1973, Christmas in Christ Chapel is a time for the Gustavus Adolphus College community to celebrate the holidays with one another. Over 300 students, faculty, and staff bring the program to life each year through the use of music, dance, spoken word, and the visual arts. A new theme is chosen each year with choirs and orchestras performing live for over 5000 audience members."

This year's theme is "Life Abundant: A Celebration of Christmas during the 500th year of the Reformation."

11. Go to multiple sporting events on campus and cheer on your fellow Gusties!

"Gusties Will Shine!"

12. The Nobel Conference.

Taking place on October 3rd and 4th. There are no classes on these two days so why not attend the conference? This year is the 53rd conference, and its theme is Reproductive Technology: How Far Do We Go?

13. Go to "The Dive."

You have to get your groove on in "The Dive" at least once!

14. Go to the President's Ball.

This year will be the 33rd annual President's Ball! It will take place on March 10th at the Verizon Wireless Center in Mankato, MN. It is a semi-formal dinner event with a dance following. The dance features live music and an opportunity to try your hand at the blackjack tables! Event tickets will go on sale Monday, February 15th at the information desk.

15. "Case Day?"

Yes? No? Maybe so? I'm not going to tell you what to do.

16. Go to the annual "fall fest" in the Arb.

Typically held during "Family Weekend" which this year is on October 6-8th. It has a lot of fun activities!

17. Have a conversation with President Bergman!

When you have a President, who is so amazing, friendly, and involved as she is, why wouldn't you want to have a conversation with her?!

18. Go to a "weekend movie" in Nobel.

Every Friday and Saturday night, CAB shows free movies in Wallenberg Auditorium in Nobel Hall. Check out the CAB social media or the GAC schedule to see which movies are playing and when.

19. Go to the "Big Concert!"

This year is a "Big Concert" year! Every other year GAC's Concerts Committee plans a "Big Concert" here on campus! Past years performers were Hunter Hayes, Timeflies and Mike Stud, and Gavin DeGraw. Stay tuned to find out who will be performing this year!

20. Go to the annual "Mr. Gustavus Pageant."

The pageant usually takes place in March in the Caf. It showcases the lovely talents of some of our junior and senior men. The guys raise money for the Theta Xi Gamma sorority's philanthropy, Miracles of Mitch. The foundation raises money to support the families of children with cancer.

21. Go to "Midnight Express."

Each semester on the night before finals begin, "Midnight Express" takes place! Take a break from studying and get in line for some delicious free food served by your professors and listen to live music by the Gustavus jazz bands!

22. Pet a "Campus Cat."

The Campus Cats, "Cooper" and "Nemo," belong to Elizabeth Jenner, a professor in the Sociology/Anthropology and Gender, Women, and Sexuality studies departments. They like to wander around campus and are probably the cutest and furriest "Gusties" you will ever meet!

23. Make some amazing and unforgettable memories with your fellow Gusties!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
