April 7th. Relay For Life 2017. 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.
For me, one of my most favorite days of the year. Cancer sucks. Relay For Life is an organization that raises money for the American Cancer Society in hopes of finding a cure for cancer and helping those currently suffering. Once a year they hold a 12-hour fundraising event, and UGA is lucky enough to have our very own event at the Intramural Fields. Let's Relay to find a cure. Never been to Relay? Here's what you have to look forward to.
Food.
Lots of food. Relay teams each will have a booth set up selling lots and lots of food. Think fried Oreos, cotton candy, baked goods. All the good stuff. Even if you come for the food alone... you will not be disappointed.
Relay-ing.
At Relay, there must be someone walking around the track at all times, and everyone takes turns. This is because we will "relay" until we find a cure for cancer. You'll feel connected to everyone surrounding you; after all, you're all in this together.
Celebration.
A huge part of Relay For Life is celebrating cancer survivors. Survivors will come to the event and are honored throughout the night. We support their brave fight.
Remembrance.
The highlight of every Relay (in my personal opinion) is the luminaria ceremony. Luminaria are bags filled with candles that illuminate when it gets dark. The bags are dedicated to someone who has passed or survived cancer. When it gets dark, all of the luminaries light up together and create a beautiful display around the track. We remember those we have lost to cancer-- and remember the reason why we relay in the first place. This is a can't miss event. I promise it'll change your life.
Lots & lots (and lots....) of other things.
Think games, events, performances, and everything in between. Come out and support Relay For Life this Friday, April 7th at the IM fields from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Come join in our fight against cancer, and help us to find a cure. We can't wait to see you there.
