There have been many great running backs to come through the University of Georgia football program. Names like Herschel Walker, Nick Chubb, and Knowshon Moreno come to mind when you think about the barrage of backs the Dawgs have obtained throughout history. Two backs from this legendary fraternity will add another reason as to why Georgia is RBU, as Todd Gurley and Sony Michel will face off In Super Bowl LIII in Atlanta. Henceforth, UGA will be called RBU.
While Michel and Gurley were only teammates for one season, Michel has quoted how good of a running back Gurley was in his time at RBU, and how much he learned from the Rams running back. It's amazing that one of these two didn't win a Heisman Trophy while in college because both of them are in the all-time ranks of RBU. The only back to win a Heisman from RBU was Herschel Walker, but with the way things have been going at RBU, they will for sure find the second guy that can win the award from the running-back position.
This won't be the first time in history that two teammates meet in the Super Bowl, but it will be one of the few times former teammates from the same position will battle for the Lombardi Trophy. In fact, last season's Big Game between the Patriots and Eagles had former teammates Rob Gronkowski (tight end) and Nick Foles (quarterback) face off, and a few years earlier, Seahawks QB Russel Wilson and (again) Patriots running back James White. But to have teammates from the same position make the Super Bowl for different teams is legendary.
Michel and Gurley have had amazing seasons for their respective teams, and have been catalysts for their Super Bowl runs. Michel has been the one with more presence as of late, scoring five touchdowns throughout the Patriots two playoff games. If Michel scores once during the Super Bowl, he will break the record for most rushing touchdowns in a single playoff year. For a rookie who didn't even rush for 1,000 yards and only scored 6 TD's throughout the regular season, this feat is nothing short of amazing.
As for Gurley, he began the year tearing the league up, putting serious consideration on him for the best running back in the NFL period. He shattered his personal best of TD's in a season with 17 in 2018, broke 1,000 yards for the third time in his four-year career, and averaged a healthy 4.9 yards per carry. Gurley slowed down just a bit as the season wound down, putting up an abysmal 10 yards on 4 carries during the NFC Championship against the New Orleans Saints, but scored a touchdown during the game. He also received an injury during week 15 of the regular season, which many believe is a reason for the struggles in the title game. He should amend himself in Atlanta next Sunday.
Whether the Patriots or Rams win in Super Bowl LIII, RBU fans should be rejoicing for one of the two great running backs who has stapled the term RBU into their alma maters football program. Perhaps one of the two could join Terrell Davis as the second RBU alumni to win a Super Bowl MVP. If Michel breaks the touchdown record and has a big day for the Patriots leading to a win, he is a sure frontrunner for the award. Gurley has a little bit of work to do to shake off the poor performance from the last game but is sure to be a factor for the Rams in The Big Game. At the end of the day though, RBU fans can thank these two guys for making the rest of the country realize that UGA is officially Running-Back University.
