When I opened the Uber app on my phone a few days ago, I noticed something: new safety features and greater transparency from Uber. In recent months, the ride-share company has faced criticism after 103 cases of sexual assault came to light. This not only hurt the company financially, but demanded a response and a solution.
Although Uber now admits to these allegations, the company was found to have kept their knowledge on the issue under wraps. A crisis response was needed to address the company’s policies for screening drivers, responding to allegations of assault, and increasing both rider and driver safety.
Under new leadership, Uber has taken steps to improve its image and reputation.
Uber’s first step was to update its community guidelines to include no sexual contact while using the platform. Now, Uber’s website features a sexual assault prevention video to create a safer community for both drivers and passengers. In light of the recent assault cases, the issue has become a top priority for the company.
Therefore, Uber’s second step was to update its protocols, which include rerunning background checks on drivers annually, regardless of the need, for which it will pay. This is an extra safety measure which will allow Uber to keep tabs on their drivers under a uniform background check rule.
Uber is focused on being a part of the solution and delivering on its promise to increase security measures in all aspects of the Uber ride share process, and ensure both drivers and passengers are safe.
Uber’s third step was introducing a safety center to its mobile platform, a promise it delivered as of a week ago.
The safety center features improvements to Uber’s safety features. Although most of these features launched in mid-April, the service is now complete. Passengers can designate five ‘Trusted Contacts’ to be notified of your ride’s status. An emergency button has also been included so riders can contact 911 at the push of a button, with live location updates so the passenger always knows their location.
The safety center also features improvements to Uber’s transparency, including information on the driver screening process, insurance information and protections, and the company’s most up-to-date community guidelines. This move helps Uber assume greater responsibility and adhere to the policies it sets for itself. Improving their transparency will also improve consumer trust and brand loyalty.
