Independence Day has become an almost terrifying holiday for most Washington D.C.residents. The Department of Homeland security issued a terror threat to those celebrating near the nation’s Capital. Within the past few weeks there have been terror attacks in other countries linked to Islamic state signaling a cause for alarm. The National Mall show cases the largest firework show in the country attracting people from all across the U.S., making it the perfect target.
Less than a week apart, two Military bases received false active shooting calls within the same area. All Officials have been on edge because of possible terror threats around Independence Day in the Capitol area. What are the odds that two false shootings happened two days before the holiday, and two days after, is this a warning? Terror attacks mainly target areas that have an abundant amount of people around a date that’s close to a national holiday.
Monday morning July 6, 2015 a single gunshot was reported from The Walter Reed Medical center located on the Naval Support Activity base in Bethesda, Maryland. The call was made at 10:50 a.m. to local officials who acted immediately. The base went on lock down while local federal, and military officials evacuated Walter Reed Medical Center, and searched the entire building for signs of a shooting. After four hours of investigation, Montgomery County police captain announced that there was no indication of any injuries or shootings. Ironically the Thursday shooting cleared with no gunman or signs of shootings as well. This shooting was reported around 8 a.m. on July 2, 2015.
This could possibly be a warning or simply an act of paranoia. Both phone calls were made from the second floor of the buildings that were targeted, which could just be a coincidence. However, two years ago a shooting occurred on the Navy Yard, killing 13 people and injuring eight in the same building the call originated from.
Around the time of this year's celebrations, there was little national coverage or media attention closer to the patriotic holiday. Officials have not publicly announced further investigation. After a shooting two years ago, and two false shootings happening days’ a part, authorities will be extremely vigilant especially when there’s a major national holiday approaching.
