Avid Twitter users are shocked with the news that Twitter will be upping the character count by double. The original 140 character count was the hallmark of Twitter and anyone who uses Twitter frequently knows just how frustrating this can be. I mean, how can you truly express something in just 140 characters?
So, Twitter has heard their users loud and clear, and people have mixed feelings about it. Some think that this is a great new way to let people truly express the way they feel without having to cut their thought in half. Some people think that this is transforming the app and making it into something more like Facebook, which is practically known for its long complaints, novellas, and chain posts.
I believe that this will help the app to be more accessible for many people. Twitter (at least in the past) has been about coming up with witty lines and funny relatable sentences that describe you and your feed.
But now, the pressure to have the perfect tweet is virtually gone. Although many say that "brevity is the soul of wit," this gives people a chance to maybe put just a bit more soul into their wit. This is a chance for people to maybe stop typing something in their notes and screenshotting and posting it when they want to rant, and instead, come up with a catchier line that allows them to rant on social media without out-writing the Bible.
In essence, the decision to change the character count on Twitter was no doubt well-intentioned. However, it is going to take some getting used to for those who had spent their entire careers on social media perfecting the art of a 140 character-count tweet.
Although this is twice the character-count from before, it does not necessarily mean that the app is becoming a shadow of Facebook. There are still quite a few things that are too unique to Twitter that makes it not just another Facebook wanna-be.
Facebook is centered around the spread of videos and sharing and liking other people's photos. However, it cannot be denied that Facebook centers their audience around an older crowd, as "Facebooking" has become a thing of the past for the current and future generations.
If there is one thing we can be sure of, it is that we will be hearing a lot more from those who are already vocal on Twitter (aka our lovely friend Trump. Side note: there is a reason Twitter did not give him the power to test the new 280 character idea like they did many other public figures). Now, people will be able to express their ideas in longer character counts and will not be cut short!
I think that this will only improve the app, especially for newcomers. The idea that now your thoughts do not have to fit into a mere 140 characters is pretty cool. Now I have all the more space to write complete thoughts while not having to worry about my thoughts being cut in half.
