A 20-Something Year Old's Guide To Happiness

If you're reading this, congratulations! You survived the emotional, confusing time that is adolescence. You are now transitioning into the life stage that will mold you into who you will be for years to come. This stage of adulthood will cause stress, doubt, and inevitable frustration. It is important for your sanity to maintain happiness along this complicated ride. Below are phrases all 20-something year olds should live by to assure bliss and enjoyment throughout early adulthood:

Forgive, but never forget.

Forgiveness is essential to your emotional health. Without it you'll be stuck with bothersome, unnecessary, and uneasy feelings. Learn the intended lesson and move on from the past. You'll be wiser and better prepared for the future.

Stop being a people pleaser.

When you reach an excessive point of selflessness, start fulfilling your own wants and needs. Do something today that makes you happy, without seeking permission to live how you desire to.

Accept what can't be changed.

Don't stress over what's beyond your control. Embrace it. Work with it. Grow from it.

Break routines and stray from the norm.

Veer off of your ordinary path and see where this new trail takes you. Opportunity awaits when you switch up your usual direction.

Submerge yourself in positive surroundings.

Cleanse yourself of negativity and choose to step foot into an optimistic door. This will place your happiness at an all time high.

Worry less, enjoy more.

Put less focus on what could go wrong and more emphasis on what is going right. Calm your nerves, and savor the moments in front of you.

Laugh as often as you can.

Allow amusement to keep you smiling. As Charlie Chaplin said, "A day without laughter is a day wasted."

Most importantly...

Work hard, play hard.

Treat yourself, because you deserve it! Reward all of your efforts. Make these years about more than just the start of your career and financial independence. Splurge and celebrate after a long day. This balance of seriousness and fun is the key to success in this decade of your life.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.
