Pure Barre, Orangetheory Fitness, CrossFit, SoulCycle, Zumba, Pilates, Body Pump, Yoga…I could go on and on about the different types of group fitness trends that are sweeping the nation, but the point is that I believe fitness classes are an important tool in reaching your goals.
Sometimes, attending a group fitness class for the first time is scary when you have no idea what to expect. Trust me, I've tried a ton of them. Here are twelve things I wish I would have known before I took my first fitness class:
1. Ask for help.
The instructors are professional and friendly and if you don't know what a certain term means, or confused on how to use a piece of equipment make sure to ask for help! I get it; their biceps and abs are intimidating, especially when you don't have them, but they are there because they want to help you reach your goals.
2. Don’t sweat it.
It doesn't matter if you're a beginner or a fitness buff, anytime you choose to try a new fitness class you'll get confused and frustrated at some point--it's just part of the process. I feel like there's a stigma around fitness classes that you should be able to go once and automatically know what you’re doing, but realistically, that's never the case.
You don't play basketball once and go up against the NBA, everything takes time and practice, so be patient with yourself.
3. Let your body have a say.
You know your body better than anyone else, if the instructor says to push harder and you feel like you can't, don't feel discouraged. Don't get me wrong, it is important to encourage yourself to work harder and improve, but your safety is more important. Also, your instructor will thank you for not vomiting or fainting during class.
4. Know that there are alternatives.
Let the instructor know if you have any health conditions or injuries before the class starts. Nothing is worse for you (or your health) than trying to do an exercise even though it’s hurting you. For me, I have tendinitis in my wrist, so I always let my coaches know that floor exercises prove to be more uncomfortable for me.
They are always happy to provide me with alternative exercises that are just as challenging. All you have to do is ask.
5. Don’t be a follower.
In certain types of fitness classes, like Zumba, it is easy to follow the group and not do the moves or routine to the fullest. If you don't feel like you're catching on to a routine, take a step back for a moment and really watch the instructor.
In other classes, ask the instructor to demonstrate the exercise again. You want to make sure you are benefiting from each repetition and performing correctly so you don’t injure yourself.
6. Every class is not for you.
And that's okay. The greatest part about fitness is the amount of different ways there are to get into shape. CrossFit may not be for you, but it is for someone! You may love spin, but I can personally say that it's an hour of hell for me.
There is something out there for everyone so never get upset because one type of class didn't work out. Keep trying and you will eventually find one that's both fun and effective.
7. Nom, nom, nom.
Everyone is different, but I know that if I don’t have a small snack at least 45 minutes before a workout then I know I'm not going to be able to work at my full potential. A banana is my go-to option because it's filled with carbs for energy and potassium to promote muscle health.
8. That’s some high-quality H2O.
Bobby Boucher knows what’s up. It's important to stay hydrated, before, during and after your workout. Dehydration can happen to anyone, and drinking more water can help increase your metabolism. It's a win-win.
9. Speak up.
Talk to other class-goers. I've never been to a class where I felt like people weren't supportive. Talk to people about what to expect and what they like about the class, plus they usually have some great tips on how to make the most out of your experience. #FitFam.
10. Try it twice.
Just because the first time wasn't the best doesn't mean you can't enjoy whatever style class you picked. This goes along with frustration being part of the process. Once you know how the class runs, you might be more comfortable and have a more effective workout.
11. Not every day will be good.
There are plenty of times I've walked out of a class frustrated about my performance. What went wrong? I was working my hardest, yet I didn't measure up to my past performances. I had to accept that it's okay. There are tons of variables like the time of day, amount you've slept, contents in your stomach, etc. that will impact your performance.
12. Have fun!
You know you've found a great fitness class when you leave feeling energized and sweaty, but you also had a blast. Group fitness classes are designed to make working out fun and productive. Enjoy it!
