'Twas The Week Before Recruitment

A poem celebrating a sorority girl's Work Week.

Twas’ the week before recruitment and all through the houses,

Girls practiced their chants and searched for lost blouses.

The letters were placed on the lawn with care,

In hopes that PMNs would soon call them theirs.

The actives didn’t have time to snuggle in beds,

Because crafts for their littles ran through their heads.

The alumni with clipboards and the president with her pin,

Could not wait for all the new members to come in.

The week was halfway through, and the excitement didn’t waver

(Although they weren’t willing to stay any later).

During breaks, they would dance to Beyoncé soundtracks

And when each day finished, they ended with snacks.

When out on the row, the Rho Gams rose such a clatter,

the girls sprang from their chapter rooms to see what was the matter.

“The PNM’s come in less than a week!”

The Greek girls were so excited they hardly could speak.

The girls stacked the doors, practicing their smiles and rhymes,

ensuring a perfect entrance, and that there were no fines.

Their dresses all matched, a beautiful sight.

These girls looked together, not a clap wasn’t right:

Think Theta! Go Kappa! Be a DG! and more!

Watching AChiO, KD, PiPihi, and DZ stack the door!

Watch ADPi, Zeta, and Gamma Phi go!

And don’t forget Tri Delt and ChiO!

Up late they all stayed, working on their new crafts

Decorating the house (not a coffee was decaf).

The next week was exciting, but as they all clapped,

Most girls were thinking “I really just need a nap!”

As they practiced and polished, as they stood on the street,

They wondered, “Gosh, how many more hours on our feet?”

But the smiles on the PNM’s faces, the glitter, the Insta pics,

Was worth all the practice, high heels and lipsticks.

Before they knew it, recruitment was here

And all of the practice made incredible cheers.

Just like they had done the work week before,

The noise of them yelling was an incredible roar.

And on the week marched, talking to girls on repeat,

The girls must have had at least 300 conversations that week.

Each girl found their PNM, and faces aglow,

Talking about school, friends, family, and Fuego queso.

They knew they had limited spots to give away,

Because they wanted only the best on bid day.

And finally on bid day, invitation in hand,

Today was the day, with their sisters they’d stand.

The new member class took photos, delighted

To learn all the signs and the colors, they were all too excited.

And finally, as the day turned into night,

"Happy Bid Day to all and to all a Greek night!"

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
