TV Recommendations: Netflix Original Movies

I've done TV shows, I've done other streaming services, but today it's all about the world of cinema. Or at least the cinema of the small screen. Netflix has a vast array of original movies, and it might seem daunting to pick one out to watch, but I've got 50 of them right here for you to peruse from. Each comes with a short description and a score to help better determine which film can become your next Netflix favorite. (Update: I've tried my best to add trigger warnings to all the movies that I remember deal with sensitive topics at some point. I'm sure I forgot some though, so please make sure to look the film up if you're concerned before watching)

1. Coin Heist

https://twitter.com/AlexisGZall/status/804411982539460608/photo/1

After a field trip to the U.S Mint, a mismatched group of teens plan a heist.

Score: 5/10- I watched this one a long time ago, and I can't remember that much about it. And that's saying something since I read the book too.

2. #RealityHigh

https://twitter.com/NetflixLifee/status/906369152977215489/photo/1

A smart high school girl is suddenly befriended by the in-crowd at her school.

Score: 5/10- Pretty standard teen movie stuff... could be better, could be much, much worse.

3. Step Sisters

https://twitter.com/Keishamaze/status/959850370045530112/photo/1

A high-achieving college student is tasked with teaching another sorority how to compete in step dancing competitions to save their reputation.

Score: 7/10- There's just not that many movies about college on Netflix, and I found this film refreshing for that reason.

4. Dude

https://twitter.com/IndieWire/status/987231896852611073/photo/1

There's two weeks left of high school, and these four best friends go through a lot of stuff and smoke a lot of weed.

Score: 3/10- This movie committed a lot of crimes but to name a few... killing off Austin Butler's character in the 1st five minutes, hiring actors just shy of 30 to play high schoolers, making Lucy Hale's character insufferable (like she is in everything else too)- the list goes on.

5. To The Bone

https://twitter.com/BritishVogue/status/880898740608827393/photo/1

(Trigger Warning: eating disorders) A young woman with Anorexia Nervosa is sent to live at a group home to try to help her get better.

Score: 7/10- For someone who only knows a little about eating disorders, I found this film a nice way to learn more.

6. When We First Met

https://twitter.com/WritersGuildF/status/1118559752374538243/photo/1

One guy keeps going back in time to the night he first met the girl of his dreams to try to make them more than friends.

Score: 7/10- It's got Adam Devine, so you know it's worth the watch.

7. Candy Jar

https://twitter.com/CC_Columbia/status/996110490043641856/photo/1

Two high-achieving debate team rivals team up and create a bond.

Score: 9/10- I found this one much more delightful than many of the other teen movies coming out at the time, plus I learned quite bit about debate, including that the really good competitors talk as fast as auctioneers.

8. The Kissing Booth

https://twitter.com/THR/status/1072561518112399360/photo/1

Two best friends' relationship becomes in jeopardy when one of them breaks one of their biggest rules and starts dating the other's sibling.

Score: 2/10- Solely gets a 2 for introducing me to Jacob Elordi, other than that, it was super unrealistic and cheesy to the point that I don't know how some of that dialogue ended up in the final cut.

9. Set It Up

https://twitter.com/ChicksInTheOff/status/1009483785254162435/photo/1

After two workers have enough of their tough bosses overworking them, they set their bosses up together.

Score: 10/10- Nothing but good things to say about this one; it may even be my favorite rom-com of all time, and that's a big honor.

10. To All the Boys I've Loved Before

https://twitter.com/netflix/status/1227275840020303872/photo/1

To prevent her sister's ex-boyfriend from finding out her true feelings for him, a teenage girl enters into a fake relationship with one of her former crushes.

Score: 10/10- Absolutely lives up to the hype of the books and gives off a specific aesthetic reminiscent of classic teen rom-coms.

11. Sierra Burgess is a Loser

https://twitter.com/THR/status/1038200479132598272/photo/1

A case of mistaken identity leads to one girl using the popular girl at her school to get the attention of the guy she likes.

Score: 4/10- This film came under fire for some problematic moments, but at the end of the day, the protagonist was unlikeable anyways.

12. The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society

https://twitter.com/tomandlorenzo/status/1028785751851454464/photo/1

During World War II, a writer exchanges letters with people living on the small island of Guernsey and goes to visit.

Score: 9/10- Such a sweet film that will make your heart happy. And yes, there is a book, and yes, I have read it.

13. The Holiday Calendar

https://twitter.com/YoungStarPhils/status/1076069773069316097/photo/1

An Advent calendar starts to predict a girl's life.

Score: 5/10- See, I know I watched this movie, but I can't remember anything about it.

14. The Princess Switch

https://twitter.com/movieguide/status/1063937350760316928/photo/1

A royal and an average woman switch places during the holiday season.

Score: 6/10- I mean, it gives you that warm Christmas feeling inside, but that's about it.

15. The Christmas Chronicles

https://twitter.com/IGN/status/1065360987488960512/photo/1

Two siblings go on a wild adventure with Santa Claus on Christmas night.

Score: 7/10- It gives off similar vibes to the Christmas movies that you watched as a kid.

16. Dumplin'

https://twitter.com/_melaniemay/status/1124374103023132672/photo/1

To spite her pageant-loving mother and prove a point, a teenage girl and her group of friends enter a beauty pageant.

Score: 10/10- So criminally underrated to the point that it's almost offensive, this movie adaptation based off of one of my favorite books makes me smile from start to finish.

17. Unicorn Store

https://twitter.com/IndieFocus/status/1114209478230982656/photo/3

A budding artist in a boring job attempts to buy a unicorn.

Score: 8/10- I know the plot sounds sort of weird, but from what I can remember, this was a really cute film.

18. Good Sam

https://twitter.com/screenrant/status/1123669820522811393/photo/1

A TV news reporter tries to figure out who's leaving bags of cash at different people's homes around the city.

Score: 7/10- A sweet movie, just a tad lukewarm at times.

19. The Perfect Date

https://twitter.com/PageSix/status/1110631524762898432/photo/1

In need of cash, a teenage boy creates an app that lends himself out to different people who don't want to go to things alone.

Score: 6/10- Noah Centineo was everywhere you looked on Netflix a couple years ago, and this movie was his middle-of-the-road work.

20. Someone Great

https://twitter.com/Dazed/status/1122923504314343425/photo/1

3 best friends grapple with their love lives during one last hurrah before one moves away.

Score: 10/10- An ultimate girl power movie through and through.

21. The Last Summer

https://twitter.com/TVGuide/status/1125117167828127744/photo/1

A whole collection of teens figure out how to best spend their last summer before college.

Score: 8/10- I was expecting a cheesy teen film after watching the trailer, but this one was much better than I originally gave it credit for.

22. Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile

https://twitter.com/getFANDOM/status/1092502623834370048/photo/1

Recounts the story of one of America's most notorious serial killers, Ted Bundy.

Score: 9/10- Zac Efron's performance is reason enough to watch; he completely embodies the character.

23. Always Be My Maybe

https://twitter.com/arden_cho/status/1134525079935524864/photo/1

Childhood friends rekindle their romance decades later despite massively differing career paths and life goals.

Score: 9/10- If it's good enough for Keanu Reeves, it's good enough for you.

24. Murder Mystery

https://twitter.com/screenrant/status/1182794695925215232/photo/1

An American couple gets tied up in a murder and an international chase to the real killer after being invited on some rich guy's yacht.

Score: 9/10- Sandler & Aniston are a great comedic duo, and I'm always down for a good mystery.

25. Tall Girl

https://twitter.com/firstshowing/status/1167434845699682305/photo/1

A really tall high school girl grapples with all the normal things that teenagers go through along with her insecurities about her height.

Score: 8/10- No matter what all the haters say, as a tall girl myself, I related to a lot of the things the main character went through, and I felt like overall this was a great body positivity movie.

26. Secret Obsession

https://twitter.com/getFANDOM/status/1092502623834370048/photo/1

After surviving a gruesome car accident, one woman starts to realize that her husband might not be who he says to be.

Score: 6/10- It might not be the most well-constructed thriller, but it still can bring the suspense.

27. Holiday in the Wild

https://twitter.com/KristinDavis/status/1190360806078107648/photo/1

While on a vacation in Africa, a woman meets a pilot and together they work at an elephant reservation.

Score: 7/10- I'd watch anything that has to do with elephants.

28. Let It Snow

https://twitter.com/Polygon/status/1192954977930678272/photo/1

Showing how numerous teens cope with a massive snowstorm and all their relationship issues.

Score: 10/10- Another one that was a book I read first, I was absolutely pleased with how they brought the story to life and thought it was a wonderful addition to the holiday genre for teens or even people of all ages.

29. Klaus

https://twitter.com/Polygon/status/1221432879944814592/photo/1

A postman is sent to work in a small town and discovers a toymaker living in the woods.

Score: 10/10- This is such a cute story about the origin of Santa & Christmas.

30. The Knight Before Christmas

https://twitter.com/made_nous/status/1197564048252055552/photo/1

A knight from centuries ago is accidentally transported into the modern world and falls in love with the woman who takes him in.

Score: 6/10- Vanessa Hudgens is really trying to monopolize the holiday rom-com genre, and I would like to ask her to stop, because although this movie was entertaining, it feels like it's been done before and with better results.

31. Horse Girl

https://twitter.com/totalfilm/status/1226084769135550464/photo/1

A woman's weird dreams have her questioning her whole life.

Score: 3/10- This movie is absolutely bonkers, and I had to read an explanation once I finished watching. In concept, it's interesting, but in reality, it's just... a lot.

32. To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You

https://twitter.com/PhilippineStar/status/1206907512106057728/photo/2

Life gets complicated for Lara Jean, when another recipient of one of her iconic letters comes back into her world.

Score: 9/10- If I'm being honest, the sequel just didn't hit the mark as much as I thought the first one did, although Jordan Fisher is THE perfect John Ambrose McClaren.

33. All The Bright Places

https://twitter.com/TheEricGoldman/status/1233447493683167232/photo/1

(Trigger Warning: bipolar disorder & suicide) Two teens struggling through loss and mental health problems work on a school project together and become important parts of each other's lives.

Score: 10/10- Haha, I've read this one too. It's so good, so sad, so many amazing things, and above all, it touches on some really important topics that teenagers might be going through in a more sensitive way than other shows and movies in the past.

34. Lost Girls

https://twitter.com/AwardsCircuit/status/1240657745071747078/photo/1

Score: 8/10- a compelling mystery that is even more interesting knowing that it happened in real life.

35. Love Wedding Repeat

https://twitter.com/netflix/status/1248688702278086657/photo/1

A bunch of shenanigans go down at a wedding as it replays over and over again.

Score: 3/10- I love a wedding movie, but even Sam Claflin couldn't save me from wanting to go on my phone for the majority of the film.

https://twitter.com/netflix/status/1253785128863625216/photo/1

38. The Lovebirds

https://twitter.com/netflix/status/1264291848131993602/photo/1

After witnessing a crime, a couple on the brink of breaking up has to band together to keep themselves from getting arrested or killed.

Score: 8/10- Two comedic geniuses coming together is going to make for some laughs, but I have to admit I got a little lost in the plot halfway through.

39. Feel the Beat

https://twitter.com/digitalspy/status/1274031451093315587/photo/1

When a Broadway hopeful royally screws up her audition, she goes back to her hometown and coaches a ragtag dance team for a second chance with a big Broadway exec.

Score: 7/10- It's cute for the whole family to watch, but some things just seemed too farfetched for me, including the likeability of the protagonist at times. She redeems herself though by the end.

40. Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga

https://twitter.com/screenrant/status/1287745818250956800/photo/1

An underdog duo from Iceland compete at the Eurovision competition.

A woman and her friends travel all the way to a Mexican resort to delete an email she sent to the guy she likes that she thought had ghosted her.

Score: 6/10- There are some moments in this movie that are absolutely wild, but the reunion of Winston and Aly from New Girl makes up for some of the ridiculousness.

42. The Kissing Booth 2

https://twitter.com/NetflixFilm/status/1278368356857348096/photo/3

Elle juggles her friendship, long distance relationship, upcoming college decisions, and a new boy who catches her eye during her senior year of high school.

Score: 2/10- The fact that this movie got a sequel is beyond me, but the thing that is even more unbelievable is that this one is somehow worse than the first.

43. Work It

https://twitter.com/slashfilm/status/1284193938946105349/photo/1

After lying at a college interview, a senior has to create her own dance team while also learning how to actually dance herself.

https://twitter.com/DEADLINE/status/1291365039811653632/photo/1

A woman travels with her boyfriend to meet his parents.

Score: 6/10- This movie is trippy and frankly above my head, but I read an explanation of it once I finished and it made much more sense- good for if you want to think & look for clues while watching.

49. The Devil All The Time

https://twitter.com/omelete/status/1290300568510971905/photo/2

(Trigger Warning: suicide, sexual assault) It's the 1960s in rural West Virginia, and let's just say there's a lot of sinners in this one small town.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
