Recently, I realized that I spent too much time on my phone. To people, especially adults, that may seem like a "duh" statement, but I always felt that I kept my phone use in check. When I'm at work, my phone remains in my purse. When I'm in class, my phone generally remains in my backpack. It wasn't that I was addicted. It was more that, whenever I had any level of down time, I'd reach for my phone, even if I knew nothing new was there because I had nothing better to do.
In addition, I'm in a couple group texts that, at times, leave over 100 messages on my phone in less than 10 minutes. It became a distraction. At the same time, I would get notifications from snaps, tweets, and Instagram posts, and it all just seemed like a bit much.
I ultimately made the decision to turn off my notifications on all of them. I started with Instagram and twitter, moved on to snapchat, then finally texts. I still get notified if someone calls, and the little badge number still shows up next to the app.
This may seem a bit excessive, but it's not like I'm cut off from the world. I still can open my phone if I want to check my communications, and if it's very important then the person knows to call me. It's simply a more relaxing way to live life. I'm not hinging my life on what is popping up on my phone.
I know this may not be the answer for everyone, but I would 10/10 recommend it to everyone, at least for a bit. You begin to realize how much you rely on your electronics that you don't really need to. While it's summer and everything is a bit slower, just try to make this simple change. It's weird at first, I know, but I really think, in the end, it'll be worth it.
