Tulsa Strong: Light in Tragedy
Jared Jacob

I moved from Tulsa to Salt Lake City about 11 months ago. The last few days, I've experienced absolute heartbreak watching a tragedy unfold back home. It is tragic a man lost his life and it is tragic a policewoman was in a situation where she felt she had to take a life.

I nervously watched the news and social media anticipating what would follow. As the daughter of a local police officer and the friend of many in the black community, I prayed Tulsans would remain peaceful. A city that has already seen such violent destruction from race riots, did not need to see the destruction again. I knew we were stronger than that. I told others we were stronger than that. I'm proud to say we showed we are stronger than that.

Being from Tulsa I am immensely proud of the way my home handled the recent tragedy. This situation makes me sick to my stomach on all sides. There are no easy answers. However, I am in awe of the way Tulsa peacefully reacted. It's a stark contrast against the nightmare currently happening in North Carolina.

Let me start this by saying this article is not choosing one side or the other. This is not for or against either side of the argument. This is simply an acknowledgment of Tulsans and their leadership.

Tulsa did an exemplary job following the situation. The Mayor, the city leaders, the church leaders, and the police department handled this phenomenally. Tulsa peacefully and respectfully came together for prayer and peace.

Here are the top 10 positive things resulting from this tragedy:

10. Tulsa was recognized nationally and globally for standing up and being a leader in handling the civil unrest blanketing our entire country. Tulsa showed the nation how to be leaders in a movement for change.9.Popsey Floyd stepped up as a leader as both a police officer and a black man in the community. He promised the community he was there to serve Tulsa. He wants to help Tulsa. He wants to help be a liaison between the community and the police department. He presented a statement of positivity and call to action. Popsey posted, "I work for you. I will protect you. I do not take the Authority that comes with my badge for granted. I know you may be upset about the recent events all over the country and now here in Tulsa. I don't have the answers that you are looking for, but I will continue to be the solution.

One thing that I want you to know is this. The Tulsa police department is hiring. If you believe that change is required, please join the department and be the change that you are seeking "

8. Terrence Crutcher's family has been positive and urging peaceful activity. This family is dealing with a great deal of emotion. Rather than turn their emotion into negative emotion and react negatively, they've urged the community to be peaceful and positive.

7. Police officers and protesters joined hands to show solidarity. As we watch North Carolina's horrific scene of separation, it is wonderful to see the two sides come together in Tulsa.

6. Honk for peace "No Riot in Tulsa." Gerald Dwayne Harris took to the street corner in Tulsa with a sign and a smile. He went live and had so many people tuning in supporting and drivers going by honking in support. Thank you for contributing to the positivity, sir! https://www.facebook.com/GeraldHurricaneHarris2/vi...

5. Young Tulsans at KIPP school share positive thoughts. A teacher then shares a positive message."I ask that you love and love hard," said teacher, Rebecca Lee. This is the same school Crutcher's daughter attended. One of the students said, "We can all come together and get along. We can all be united.'"

4.Tulsans showed not only Oklahoma but the nation not to fear protests. Tulsans exemplified the purpose of protesting and how to do it respectfully. City Councilors even attended one of the demonstrations in an act of solidarity. http://www.tulsaworld.com/homepagelatest/ginnie-gr...

3. Tulsa showed other communities how to handle this situation. From interacting with the family to reaching out to the church and community leaders. Tulsa showed other cities a best practice for keeping the peace.

2.Tulsa prayed. Our prayer and peace inspired other prayer and peace across the nation.

1.Hate didn't win. Tulsa stayed peaceful.

I hope Tulsa continues to be an example to struggling cities in this difficult civil time. I hope Tulsa continues to lead the way in progress and positivity. Tulsa keep making us proud.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
