All throughout high school, my friends and I would talk about what we were going to do in college. Such as, what clubs and extra circulars we were going to participate in. I would always say I cannot wait to join a sorority.
After high school, I went to a community college. At that community college, I was a little bummed out to discover sororities and fraternities were not a thing.
I was very disappointed and I thought that I would never be able to join a sorority. My cousin and her best friend were in Delta Zeta at Jacksonville State when I was younger and I wanted nothing more than to be a sister.
Two years later I enrolled at Jacksonville State. However, I thought I'm too old. They won't take an incoming junior. I was seeing my dream of being a sorority girl fade.
THEN! My friends started talking to me and telling me how common it was to not have incoming freshmen being made sisters. This was honestly music to my ears.
While there is formal recruitment, there are also Currently Open Bidding events or COBs. In September 2017 I was given a bid to become a sister in Delta Zeta. A few months later I was initiated and now I am a sister of an amazing sorority.
While there are two different ways for you to join a sorority do not be afraid because you're "too old." There is no such thing in sorority life. There is a home for every girl.
Choosing sorority life was a great decision. If you are on the fence about joining go ahead and jump in and join one. Go through formal recruitment or just go to a bunch of COBs until you find your place.
Each sorority is different and amazing in its own way. That's how it is for every girl, we are all different in our own way. That is why there are different sororities so everyone can find what fits them.
So if you're afraid of joining a sorority don't be. Even if you don't become a sister at least you can say you tried. Even though I was told I wasn't too old, I didn't believe my friends but I went to a COB anyways. I'm blessed to be a part of a great sorority and want all girls to find their home within a sorority here at Jacksonville State or any other college where sororities are present.
