Truths From Essena O'Niell We All Need To Hear

"We were told we had made it, but none of it was real."

Last night 18-year-old Australian Instagram model Essena O'Niell proved that that life isn't worth the hype and decided the social media career she had built for herself of the past couple of years was unfulfilling. In her last YouTube video, she describes her terrifying realization of how Instagram distorted her sense of reality and self confidence. As strange as it is to hear a girl my age describe how much she despises her need for Instagram likes, O'Niell is not telling every teen to delete their social media accounts but tries to emphasize how far the world of social media is from reality and she makes some good points.

1. The ideal life most internet personalities show through instagram feeds are nothing more perfectly crafted facades

2. Instafamous accounts are paid to place or promote certain products in their posts without telling their followers

3. Don't just "do it for the insta."

Life is about the experiences you have, not about how good your Instagram post is at the end of the day.

4. "Internet personality" is not a real profession.

O'neill got sucked into the bubble of Internet fame at a young age and realized that there is really no successful future in being Instagram famous.

5. Likes don't define your self worth and should't limit your happiness.

6. Instagram isn't a talent or a profession.

7. You don't know someone just because you follow them on Instagram.

She describes her own personal experience battling depression due to lack of likes and witnessing the same effect in others more "famous" than her.

8. Praise on social media will never be as fulfilling as real life interactions.

9. Just because someone has more followers doesn't mean they are better; numbers don't matter.

10. Stop worrying about who you're following and build relationships with the people who mean something to you in real life.

Of course many of us will not go and delete our Instagram accounts, but at least Essena O'Niell has forced us to consider next time we're obsessing over the taking the perfect sunset picture and picking a complementing filter that it's not worth the stress.

Three years ago, I chose to attend college in Philadelphia, approximately 360 miles away from my small town in New Hampshire. I have learned many valuable lessons away from home, and have thoroughly enjoyed my time spent in Pennsylvania. One thing that my experience has taught me, however, is that it is absolutely impossible to beat a New England summer.

Nature is beautiful (and so is math). The last one will blow your mind.

Yes, the math major is doing a math-related post. What are the odds? I'll have to calculate it later. Many people have probably learned about the Fibonacci sequence in their high school math classes. However, I thought I would just refresh everyone's memories and show how math can be beautiful and apply to physical things everywhere around us with stunning examples.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

19 Lessons I'll Never Forget from Growing Up In a Small Town

There have been many lessons learned.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
