It's summer. Better yet, it's July. The time for vacation. The time where a select amount of people want to go to the beach, or lake, or other body of water, or perhaps a cabin in the woods, and soak up some sun. I am not one of those people. On vacation, I need to be doing something, whether it be exploring, shopping, museum hopping, whatever.
While the beach is ideal for many people and very much the "preferred" vacation spot during summer, surely there are people out there who feel the opposite and would rather visit a city environment instead.
Vacation = Entertainment, Entertainment = Relaxation
It should be a simple enough equation. Lying around = Boredom. Boredom = The Opposite of Entertainment. If you're made to go somewhere where you have to lie around, you hope there's a town or at least available Wi-Fi.
Cities Are Ideal Vacation Spots
People might say they're too crowded. There are too many people visiting already. They're expensive. Well, yeah, the last one is kind of right, but a small town will also do, plus everything seems a lot more "down home" and natural. Either way, you have museums, shopping malls, bars, festivals, eats, and general sights to see.
Beaches Must Include Towns, Boardwalks, and Resorts
Sunbathing? No way, especially if you burn easily. Not to mention, it's not fun. Even if you're an adult, the amusement park on the boardwalk sounds a lot more fun. Or perhaps that ice cream parlor? Oh! That kite in that little shop looks great, maybe you could try flying it later?
Going During the Holidays May be a Pain, But It's All Worth It
Let me tell you about the 4th of July on Grand Island. The parade is awesome (awesome as in "people camp out for good spots at least two days before" kind of awesome) and showcases what the town has to offer. Later at night, there are multiple places to watch the fireworks, and even if there's a lot of people there, you'll still find a good spot. But, with any holiday celebration, there is traffic afterward, however, it's all worth it.
Food Is Important
Come on, you have to sample the wares, whether it be the diverse cuisine of a big city or the unique, homestyle meals and snacks of a small town. Who cares about the summer body? There's another world to explore here!
Museums Aren't Only For Nerds
You may encounter one of those national museums with interactive exhibits in the city, or maybe a converted museum (The Naval Park in Buffalo is highly recommended, but make sure you're into climbing ladders), or perhaps the little historical societies that small towns have to offer. It's interesting to learn about the history of where you're staying or something you're interested in. Perhaps this coming semester, your professors will be impressed with how much you learned.
When People Don't Agree
Yes, people are entitled to their opinion that the best vacation is one where you lie around and don't explore. Well, maybe you bore easily, or you're not capable of turning your brain off unless you're asleep. It's especially bad when you're one of the few in your group that disagrees with the idea, and you have to go along with it. Oh well, there has to be SOMETHING, or you can bribe someone to bring you to the nearest town.
Beaches? Lakes? General places where the only thing you can do is lay around and soak up the sun? No! No way! We tourists need action, culture, and exploration.
