That's What Breastfeeding Is For!

Recently there has been an uproar about women breastfeeding in public. Women every where are being told that they shouldn't breastfeed in public. They are told it is "unhygienic" and "inappropriate." And yet, breastfeeding is one of the most natural things in the world.

The amount of benefits that come from breastfeeding your child are incredible. If the woman is capable it is recommended to breastfeed a baby for the first year. A breastfeeding article states that breastfeeding your child for the first year can decrease their risk of diabetes, asthma, obesity and high cholesterol when they are older.

Showing your breasts in public is completely outrageous, especially when it comes to feeding your baby, right? No.

You see advertisements left and right using breasts to sell. So why aren't women allowed to use their breasts for something so natural? Like, I don't know maybe feeding their newborn baby?

Well see, that's the thing, women are allowed. There are laws specifically stating that women are allowed to breastfeed publicly in forty nine states. Countries like Australia, Canada, Germany, the United Kingdom, all have laws allowing women to breastfeed in public.

Breasts are used to sell. This advertisement, unfortunately will not send people into an uproar if they see this in public. However, the sight of a woman giving her baby the food it needs to survive and live a healthy life has people losing their minds.

A single mother in New Jersey was fired because the hotel would not give her the extra break time she need to pump breast milk for her three month old daughter. Another woman was not allowed back into a restaurant because she was breast feeding. The restaurant had it's own set of rules stating that women can breast feed as long as they do it discretely. And yet there is a law stating that women are allowed to breastfeed in public.

Women are having to protest for rights that they already legally have. We need to start normalizing breastfeeding.

From a young age women's bodies are sexualized. It starts with dress code saying that girls should not show so much skin, because it's "distracting." Sexualizing a young girl's body saying that it's distracting to boys is where it begins. And it never ends. Women's bodies are sexualized for advertisements, to sell just about anything.

So why is there all this commotion when women want to publicly breastfeed their babies? Because when you get down to it breasts are there exactly for that reason.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
