Dealing With Trust Disorder

You've heard about common mental health disorders such as, anxiety and depression, but what about a trust disorder?

As we grow, we learn. We are taught simple things like how to brush our teeth, how to wash our hair, and to look both ways before crossing the street. We are taught "right from wrong", but in some cases we get told the wrongs are rights, and then when something right does come along we question.

We all know the common mental health disorders like depression and anxiety. What about the one no one really talks about? The one that we all keep hidden in some way, but in the back of our minds we are constantly questioning. Trying to find facts to back our feelings and reactions. I'm talking about trust issues. I don't like the word "issues". The definition of an issue is an important topic or problem. Granted, not being able to trust people is most definitely an important problem, but it isn't something that just goes away. There is no formula or equation that can solve this "problem". This "issue" did not just develop overnight. Somewhere in our lives we were lied to, we were broken. We were hurt and this was our healing method. Everyone comes from a different background, different pasts. But this trust disorder can consume you.

Speaking from personal experience, it creates anxiety. It makes you question people. Do they really like you or is this just them being nice? Are you annoying them, but they are too afraid to speak up and say you are? Are they talking about you to other people? Are they using you? Do they really care? These questions can be on a constant loop, slowly but surely creeping into your everyday life. Before you know it your trust disorder consumes you and you're no longer you. You are those questions. It's a never ending cycle of "I am a no one, therefore no one cares, there's no one to trust."

How do you cease these thoughts and take them captive? You find one person. You trust yourself first. You know how you feel in certain situations. Cease your being. Tell yourself you are worth everything you are receiving. You are worth that text at night to make sure you got home safe. You are not annoying, you're interesting and people want to hear about your day. You're talented and intelligent. Although not everyone is interested in microbiology someone wants to listen. There are people that love you completely and wholeheartedly. That just want you safe and happy.

So the next time you think that all the rights are wrong in life and there is no one out there like you. Remember we all have our own demons we fight every day. We all struggle, we all have pasts. You're an amazing human being that deserves the world and then some. You are not your disorder. You are you.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
