In the summer of 2016, I was riding in a taxi in Paris with my family when the driver asked us, "Do you guys actually like Donald Trump? To us, he seems so ridiculous". My family immediately distanced ourselves from our president, saying we did not support him at all and disagreed with his views.
To many in the international community, it seems like what Trump says reflects how all of America feels. Like how Trump is putting tariffs on our closest allies like Canada and France. But people should know that Trump only speaks for part of the population, he may be America's representative, but many, many, people here do not agree with him or his views.
First of all, between losing the popular vote and the Russia hacking our election scandal, it's not clear if Trump even had enough support in America to get elected in the first place. But now he is our president so he has to represent us when it comes to national and international matters.
But people should not see him and his bigotry and hatred and sometimes downright stupidity as representing America's values. Sure, he still has plenty of supporters left. But America is a melting pot, full of all kinds of people with all kinds of ideas and many of those ideas do not coincide with those of Trump.
Trump is just one President of the United States, who we are not even sure was elected completely fairly. He is just one (hopefully just 4 year) blip in our centuries of existence. He shapes our policies, has the power of veto, and the power to create executive orders. He is the one who meets with leaders and has secret meetings about China, and North Korea, and the Middle East behind closed doors.
But those powers, like his presidency are very temporary. In just a few years, he will be gone, and hopefully some of America's better, more tolerating values, will return. So I hope that world leaders like Macron and Trudeau don't turn their backs on the United States. Our country still wants to be allies with your countries. President Trump is one man that will lose his title and soon be replaced by tens of others after him. Please, think of America, not of Trump.
