Mr. Trump has been working this week to fill his cabinet with a collection of leaders to benefit his administration with diverse experiences and knowledge. This marks the first step in his presidency. Not only will the country have a new president, but an entire new staff of officials to advise and influence policy. These appointments will have a heavy hand in guiding our nation over the next four years. Already, Mr. Trump has announced the Chief of Staff, C.I.A. Director, Attorney General, National Security Advisor and the Chief Strategist. Each appointment makes headlines as both Republicans and Democrats analyze each pick.
Representative Mike Pompeo has been chosen for the C.I.A. Director. This job oversees all duties of the C.I.A. such as collecting and analyzing a vast amount of intelligence. Mr. Pompeo is an outspoken republican. Some commentators believe the agency needs a nonpartisan leader to head covert affairs, resulting in some to disagree with Mr. Trump’s choice. However, supporters of Mr. Pompeo agree that his service on the House Intelligence Committee and the Select Committee on Benghazi gives him a large amount of experience in dealing with national security.
Another pick popularly debated is Senator Jeff Sessions who was appointed as the Attorney General. He will be the nation’s leader in law enforcement. Strife between law enforcement and the public, illegal immigration, and terrorism found within our borders will be the focus of Mr. Sessions. He is tasked to put Mr. Trump’s plan of law and order into action. In 1986 Ronald Reagan's nomination of Mr. Sessions to federal district court judge was blocked when opponents circulated accusations of him making racist comments. This gives critics reason to denounce Mr. Sessions. However, he was Alabama’s Attorney General prior to being elected as senator. This gave him valuable experience, thus making him a smart choice in supporters eyes.
While some pundits praise and criticize Mr. Trump’s choices, others are making predictions on the effects of each selection on the future. The newly chosen officials already show that Mr. Trump will establish a right wing administration to carry out his plans. Reince Priebus will be the White House Chief of Staff. He will coordinate Mr. Trump’s daily affairs and relationships. Mr. Priebus, initially hesitant to support Mr. Trump in the primaries, vowed to support the candidate when it was clear Mr. Trump would be the nominee. Part of his platform in running for office was being the political outsider, Mr. Priebus may benefit the Trump administration with his extensive experience in Washington politics.
As for the positions yet to be filled, lists have already been created of possible choices. For Defense Secretary, many are hoping for Mr. Trump to choose Retired General James Mattis. He served for forty one years in the Marine Corps and famously said "Be polite, be professional, but have a plan to kill everybody you meet." The next Defense Secretary will take over the war against ISIS, thus making Mr. Trump’s choice widely anticipated. The recent appointments have gained a large amount of media coverage. With the many positions yet to be filled, in the coming weeks the political commentators will have much to discuss and anticipate.
