At this point, there’s not really anything we can say to really hurt Donald Trump. Even Mitt Romney tried to no avail. He’s a trend that’s sweeping the nation. At first it was funny, it was interesting to watch, but now it’s getting close to the finish line and it’s not that funny anymore, it’s more scary than it is anything else.
Many people are asking how Trump still has a following when so much of his appeal has been debunked. Many of his businesses have failed, he cannot take an insult despite seeming tough, he’s not actually funding his own campaign, so much of what he has in terms of wealth came from his father, he has no substantive or solid policies other than. So why does he still have a following?
In a world of listicles, of binging, of constant media access, entertainment is becoming a more determinant factor in what people put their time into. Do you ever remember having so much time and attention devoted to a presidential primary? It’s because Trump is an entertainer. So it doesn’t matter what he says about race, it doesn’t matter that he keeps changing his stance on important issues, it doesn’t matter that he lies or that he gets caught up caring that people insult him; the brand is what matters and the brand is what persists. As long as he keeps entertaining, it doesn’t really matter what he does.
Composure and reason matter less and less in determining who will be our next president. These candidates are more contestants than presidents. The primary has turned into a strange reality show, with the star bullying the little brother...
... Overshadowing the older brother...
... And making the parents seem lame.
The only problem is that reality shows try,, but never are really able to get to the depths of their characters. When people know they are being filmed, they put on a show for the camera.
So, while much of our world is based on entertainment, should our president follow suit? Will a president that entertains so well have the depth necessary to run the country? Trump is a brand, made of plastic and built up by screens. He reacts but he doesn’t think and when Donald Trump is all showcase, he forgoes substance and while he is entertaining, the Trump we see isn’t real.
